Finished Karel Čapek's "War with the newts" (1936). Fantastic book, an early satire on  colonialism, arms race, nationalism, industrialism, and more (and with actual newts). Easy and interesting in it's unusual and somewhat antique form. I will definitely try to find more from Čapek (not that easy in German, but there are more English translations), especially R.U.R with, supposedly, the first use of the word "robot" in it's current sense. Strongly recommended to many of this board.

JAMES MONROE: THE SEARCH FOR NATIONAL IDENTITY by Henry Ammon

James Monroe was a President that I knew a little bit about, but I had never read a full biography of him.  A bit player in the American Revolution - he fought under Washington at Trenton and was wounded in action - he enjoyed a long political career as a governor, Senator, diplomat, and cabinet secretary before being elected President in 1816.  While I now know a lot more about his long life than I previously did, I must say this book didn't change my opinion a great deal:  Monroe was a wholesome, bland, and rather boring person who still managed to live a pretty interesting life.  One thing the book pointed out that I knew but had never really thought about: Monroe was the first American president to serve in a time of international peace and tranquility.   Every previous President had to deal with the wars and conflicts that followed the French Revolution in 1789, but Monroe's term was marked by a return of peace to Europe, which gave America a chance to forge its own destiny and, as the title implies, find its national identity.  Overall, dry and LOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGG  but informative book about a rather dry, long-lived American politician. 3.5/5

WAR OF TWO: ALEXANDER HAMILTON, AARON BURR, AND THE DUEL THAT SHOCKED THE NATION by John Sedgwick

This is a well-written, elegant account of the lives and rivalry of the most famous duelists in American history, the brilliant but mercurial Alexander Hamilton, founder of the Federalist Party and America's first Treasury Secretary; and Aaron Burr, Vice President under Thomas Jefferson and general rogue and lady's man.  I've read biographies of both men before, but this one is fast-paced, easy to follow, and brings to light some details that other biographers leave out.  An excellent introduction to one of the most important political feuds in American history!

Started The Time Vault by Poul Anderson.

After WWIII humanity's reverted to sort-of a neanderthal/medieval existence. Then someone discovers a vault of lost technology...

A lot of stuff seemed familiar, but the author's well-regarded, so I checked the copyright. The novel's from in 1952; I guess it set up a lot of tropes.

I just read "I Am Ozzy" by Ozzy Osbourne.

Man, lots of interesting/crazy stories in that one.  As a doctor of his asked him years ago, with all the stuff he's done you'll wonder, "How is that guy still alive?!"

Still, a really fascinating read.
