the Nazarene https://www.amazon.com/Nazarene-Novel-Based-Life-Christ/dp/0786703792

finally finished this. What can I say I'm a slow reader. in my defense it's about 700 pages long.

Sholem Asch,  the author, is an expert on 1st century Judaism. the book is basically a retelling of the Gospel of mark: the Jesus story but not the 3 wise men and the manger stuff, just the ministry. the first hundred or so pages are just descriptions of what the place ( Jerusalem? I guess) was like then. Jesus shows up around page 150. various bible characters have roles including Mary Magdelene, Pilate, and Judas (a fairly sizeable and excellent section is written in the voice of the latter).

The story is the same but the perspective is not. the narrative switches from a Roman assistant to Pilate guy, Judas Iscariot and a student of a not quite as radical as Jesus rabbi. The latter is the voice where the author's voice comes through the most. As long as this thing is, the details are esqusite( sp?). You really feel like you're there.

at 690 or whatever pages of course there is some creative license, but to good effect. One memorable section is where Jesus and his followers travel outside familiar territory into pagan lands. There they see even worse class differences and immorality than where they came from. Slavery is everywhere. The group even goes to a Pagan ceremony, which Jesus insists they attend. I won't recount the details but it's one of the most insane things I've ever read.

If you aren't interested in this stuff it's just a long version of the story you've heard before. If you are a bible geek like I am it's massively revelatory and not un mind blowing. I'm going to read his book on the apostle Paul next

Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.

Novel based on characters from the TV series. Gomer didn't come from Mayberry in it. Still pretty funny so far.

Ye-es!
Sometimes books are so similar it is simple to do a compare and contrast. For example . . .

The 3 Janes'
My Lady Jane (mlj)
Characters: Lady Jane Grey, Lord Gifford Dudley, and Edward VI.

versus

Laura Andersen's
The Boleyn Trilogy (tbt)
Characters: King William, Minuette Wyatt, Lady Jane Grey, Lord Guildford Dudley, and Dominic, Duke of Exeter.

or, 11 reasons (mlj) is a better read than (tbt.)

01. More realistic, thus more believable.
02. More interesting.
03. More emotional.
04. More humor that works, thus a smoother read.
05. A more fun read.
06. Better understanding of characters' character (authors) thus a better understanding of characters' character (audience.)
07. More likable characters.
08. More human characters.
09 More intelligent characters.
10. More historically correct.
11. And a more satisfactory ending.

I just finished LIVES OF THE ROMANS by Stephen Matyszak.  It was a collection of 100 short biographies of citizens of ancient Rome both famous and obscure - statesmen, generals, poets, gladiators, governors, bureaucrats, and merchants - written in a very readable format, and richly illustrated.  I enjoyed it and learned from it.
