Sounds like you're in the same boat as me.  I'm seriously looking at joining the Air Force.  I can't even get hired at Wal-Mart and going back to school doesn't seem to be working out, either.

Good luck to you.

I've heard several people say, "Join the Air Force if you want an education, the Coast Guard if you want a career, anything else if you want a challenge". Apparently, the idea is that the Air Force gives you ample opportunity to expand your education, but the Coast Guard makes for the easiest, most laid-back career.

I'm in the same boat as BTM right now so don't feel down buddy.:)

I graduated from college a year ago and taking city exams to work for well the city. I just took MTA conductors test to work for the subway here in NYC. But the job I have now is off the books so I'm good for a little bit.

I worked for 14 years as a graphic artist, without the web-page-building part, and when I looked for another job, that's the one thing companies seem to be looking for. It didn't help that I despise Office, and PowerPoint in particular. If you know these programs, however, graphic arts may be a viable option.

You don't like Powerpoint?  Dunno... thought it was pretty easy to use... I did a cool Presentation on Zombies with it back in college...

Hehe.

How about databases?  EVERYTHING is run from a database.  Anyone can hook up cables and defrag drives.  If you can move and organize data you will never go hungry in the IT world.

In my experience, Powerpoint is only good for making sparse information look authoritative and complete, or for making people seem like they know what they are talking about when they (often) don't. Powerpoint makes things look good(ish), but it is usually flash at the expense of substance. My dislike for Office has nothing to do with how easy or hard it is to use. I began using desktop publishing software many moons ago that was more powerful than Word (and easier to use, at least for what I wanted). I've always been able to figure out how to do what I needed to do in any Office program; I just don't like them. I'm curmudgeonly that way. It's part of my charm  TongueOut.

Eh! At least your degree is somewhat useful.  I did a Bachelor of Arts [which around here is somewhat known as a Bachelor of Attendance] and majored in History and Cinema Studies.  Awesome course, sure, but jobs?  Nobody advertises for someone with an arts degree unless it's in research or teaching really, two things I could do but don't want to.

To make it somewhat practical you have to add a different degree to the end of it, which is why I'm in a job that has nothing to do with my degree [hometheatre] and surprisingly I quite enjoy it, but it's not sustainable long term really.

But I do second the create a website option that Menard and others have suggested.  At the very least it'll give you good practice.

Lying on your CV is another option too  Wink  Read a news clipping the other day about a guy who landed a $200,000 a year job that he didn't know how to do because he lied.  It only took them 6 months to figure out the fraud...  Sure he's getting sued now, but hey!  BounceGiggle
