New TV

No pics yet, but I got an early Christmas this past weekend.  I finally used my half of the government stimulus check I got this year and bought the TV I've been looking at for the last four months.  It's price has dropped $300 in that tiem

I got a Phillips 42" LCD tv and a new DVD player that up-converts regular DVDs up to 1080p resolution ( I have a problem popping for the Blue Ray disks).  I couldn't be happier with the performance of the set. The stations I get off Directv all look great and I even picked up some HD golf off the antenna.


Now, I only have to wait for Directv to show up Friday to install my new HD dish and DVR and I'll be in TV heaven.

Sorry that I missed this thread before.  We finally got a new TV around September (our old one was about 15 years old).  It's a similar sized Toshiba LCD, and we got a Pioneer receiver that upconverts to 1080p at the same time.  The change was amazing, and the new TV is the right size for our living room setup.

Over the weekend I watched some of the Shaw Brothers classics that have been remastered into anamorphic widescreen, and it is amazing how good some of those old kung fu flicks look.

I haven't tried it with any of my bad movie DVDs yet , but watched The Dark Night  the other night and it was great looking.

I have that series from HBO "From the Earth to the Moon"  and you can see every pore and blemish people have.

I really like the color clarity even on old programs .

And I would like to pat whoever came up with the HDMI stuff on the back .  I used to have a real rat's nest of cables behind my old TV gear and now I have three, an HDMI from my satellite receiver/DVR, another from my DVD player, and a coax from the TV to my surround receiver.  Makes thing a lot easier to manage.

My Philips DVD player came with a USB port on the front which I figured was for plugging in a flash device for photos, but it actually is there to support the CD ripping function.  Throw in a music CD and press the button on the remote and it will rip the CD and copy the MP3s to whatever you have plugged into the USB port.  Haven't tried that yet, but plan to soon.
