I decided to this post here because I love this subject. (But I suppose topic could fall into bad movies too).
For me the top one is a toss up between Close Encounters (because it comes close to "reality") and It Came From Outer Space.
Not far behind are Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and Fire in the Sky.

What are your top picks?  Cheers

My favourite is "Invasion Of the Astro Monsters"/"Monster Zero" from 1965. It manages to be both an alien invasion flick and a top-notch monster movie. I think that the "Xians" are among my favourite ever screen aliens, particularly Yoshio Tsuchiya as their weird leader.

Probably THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) or THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951).

Of course, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE needs to be on everyone's list . . .

I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?

I have 3 that I can't choose between, in no particular order they are:
The Thing (original), It Came from Outer Space, and I Married a Monster from Outer Space.
I know they're all old black and white films and the special effects aren't all spectacular, but if given a chance each one can cause a fear of the unknown.

The Thing From Another World (1951) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) seems to have the most staying power. Perhaps most nightmarish of all is Invaders From Mars (1953). Adore Forbidden Planet, This Island Earth and It Came From Outer Space too. Earth vs. The Flying Saucers is a fave too.

Isn't there a spaceship in the end of My Stepmother is an Alien.
