I was watching this on PBS last night before bed and found it fascinating.

Basically, this mechanically gifted fellow lived out his retirement years in an isolated area in Alaska.  He builds a log cabin and lives out every day life off the land.  Although I dig being near society, it makes me wonder if the simple life would be better.  Highly recommended.  Thumbup

I absolutely love that show.  I can't get over all the manual labor involved in building that log cabin.  Cutting the trees, chipping away on them until they fit, then...only a couple hundred more to go!  Then collect rocks for the fireplace, poles for the roof, make every little shelf and hinge by hand.  That guy had an incredible work ethic.  And the Alaska scenery;  what can you say?  Fabulous.

Yeah, great show! That man is amazing. My college roommate's brother worked for the Forestry Service and later National Parks and introduced me to Alone in the Wilderness and was in total and complete awe of Dick Proenneke. (Incidentally he thought poor Chris McCandless was "an idiot.") Good recommendation!
