I'm remembering a movie where the villain was an immortal wizard.  He had removed his heart from his chest and put it in a glass jar (or something) at the top of a tower.  Near the end of the film, one of the hero's sidekicks climbs the tower and destroys the heart right after the hero has driven a couple of swords through the wizard's chest.  The wizard then has an overblown death scene.

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

It may be The Sword & the Sorcerer.

The story reminds me of "Mio, my Mio", a book by Astrid Lindgren. I think it has been made into a movie, but I haven't seen it. The US-title might have been "In the Land of Faraway" (1987?). IMDB says, it has Christopher Lee and Christian Bale.

Just a guess

Edit: The evil guy, I guess Christopher Lee plays him, is rather a knight than a wizard called Kato. Mios sidekick would be JumJum. In the book, however, both are very young, so probably not it.

Gosh, this sounds so familiar. Was there a giant free-floating hand guarding the wizard's heart? I'm leaning toward a Sinbad film here.... but I just can't remember. ARGH!

Think... think.... think.... ponder.... ponder... ponder....

Hmm.  That may be it.  Of all things, the bottomless whirlpool seems familiar.

I just downloaded "Captain Sindbad" and watched the ending. Here's what happens:
Sinbad climbs up a giant rope that leads to the top of the tower where the villain's heart is kept. (It's encased in a gem or ice or something, not a jar.) Sinbad battles a giant hand (more like a spiked gauntlet with a mind of its own), "kills" it, and prepares to destroy the  beating heart.

The villain and his wizardly assistant arrive on the scene, and Sinbad engages in a swordfight with the heartless baddie. He puts a sword through the guys chest and nothing happens. Sinbad then begs the bad guy's magician to destroy the heart, and the old dude tosses it off the side of the tower. The heart explodes upon impact, and the villain dies melodramatically, and keels over the side of the tower to his doom.

Sound like this could be the movie you're looking for?
