Either he's dead or my watch has stopped!

« on: January 22, 2009, 09:38:58 PM »

Okay, I dare.  We've had lots of 100 BEST lists, but I don't see one for the most obvious category.  This idea occurred to me while watching EQUINOX (1970) for the first time in at least 30 years.  It was on tonight on FLIX (which we've been getting free for weeks).  A friend of mine watched EQUINOX with me and started talking and laughing at the thing, responding to the dopey dialogue, lousy all dubbed sound, hairspray in the guys' hair, and corny kawnee kawnee special effects.  This same friend had rebuked me this past Halloween when we were all watching DIE, MONSTER, DIE! (1965) for talking during the film (I was mocking NICK ADAMS' lifts...

Anyway, it became obvious to me that some films are so bad that their badness is what makes them irresistible entertainment.  I had first read about EQUINOX in Famous Monsters of Filmland November, 1972 in an article about shock endings (this one):

I had first seen EQUINOX not too long after on "Chiller Theater" and I now realize that that really bad movie had been the genesis of my appreciation for the truly bad cinematic sh!t.

Let's just list one at a time, to give everyone a chance.  Let's make sure they're real worthy turds.  I'll start it off with the real dud, the laugh-ass-fest EQUINOX.  As contributed by the membership,

Ok I'm game...my first nomination...

2.) Rock N Roll Nightmare
For the sock puppet demons, the cheeseball acting, flying poisonous starfish and overall nonsense.  I should also add that the film has some...er...great musical numbers.  This one is a huge guilty pleasure of mine... BounceGiggle

I nominate:
3) Hard Rock Zombies
I love this film because it totally makes no sense at all. Also it crams almost everything but the kitchen sink of bad movies into it. Where else do you get inbreds, killers. Nazis, zombies, stupid white people, severed hands, and Hitler in one film?

Well I'll go with my babe Raquel Welch.

4. One Million B.C. (1966)

It's so bad it's good with made up dialog, the scenery not bad either and it has Ray Harryhausen FX.

No.5 - "Lifeforce". A strange but highly enjoyable mash-up of the alien invasion, vampire, zombie and thriller genres. There's even a less than fully dressed female vampire villain!

6.) Trick Or Treat
Small | Large

The film had all the elements of a classic bad movie but seemed to have some great social commentary on misconceptions of heavy metal music at the time.  The fact Skippy from Family Ties plays the lead is rather funny to me.  The film plays the old marketing trick on potential buyers listing Ozzy and Gene Simmons on the front.  Of course they make up about 2 minutes of the film.

Two nods from me, if that's OK . . .

THE LOST EMPIRE -

Cheesy dialog, bushy eyebrowed sidekicks, mysterious medallions, and fearless, buxom female martial artists in a grand tournament.  Plus the immortal line -
"I hate Robot Spiders!!!"

NINJA BACHELOR PARTY

Has to be seen to be believed.  Filmed on a camcorder by two kids still in high school, with all the voices dubbed in, and a Korean ninja master who looks suspiciously like an Americam teenager in a coolie hat with a glued-on cardboard moustache, this epic contains the famous line -
"Charlie, you better not be chuggin' that Robutussin again!!"
How this thing  made it to the video store I will never know.

#9: King Kong Escapes

King Kong fights a robot version of himself which was created by the evil Dr. Who.. it's that awesome.

one more.
10) Hick Trek
Best way to describe it is, What if Jeff Foxworthy had created Star Trek. And why do cats have a bomb that turns an entire section of the galaxy into cottage cheese with little pineapple bits?

I'll stick with my first suggestion from the first 100 "BEST" list: With endless minutes of people walking through a cornfield coupled with bad effects, inexplicable editing, and uninterestingly corny dialogue, The Maize: The Movie would be a hard movie to resist just "giving up on"...

...unless you're me >:)

13)  Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity - this is one of the first bad movies I ever saw, and still one of my favorites.
