A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

THE BATMAN - Robert Pattinson plays a very emo Bruce Wayne and a tough-as-nails, brilliant caped crusader in this latest take on the Dark Knight.  Zoe Kravitz is excellent as Catwoman, and Collin Ferrel is unrecognizable as the notorious gangster known as "the Penguin."  A bit long at three hours, but I never got bored at this whodunit that begins with the murder of the mayor and moves forward from there.  The Riddler is a brilliant, psychopathic villain played with giggling insanity by Paul Dano.  This one is every bit as good as the Christopher Nolan trilogy, but nothing like those movies at the same time.  Definitely a must see!  4.5/5

X: A crew of six head out to a remote Texas farm to shoot a porno film, but the farm's elderly owners are none-to-happy when they find out what their renters are actually up to. Described as BOOGIE NIGHTS meets THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, it might as easily be described as late 70s grindhouse meets A24 production values. I think lots of folks here will dig it, but it will play just as well on the small screen as it does on the big. 3.5/5.

Jujutsu Kaisen: 0: Prequel to an anime I've never seen; no experience necessary. A teenage boy is recruited to a school where sorcerers train to exorcise curses (i.e. monsters) to learn to use his extraordinary powers. Stock anime characters, conflicts and battles, but superior animation with good use of color and perspective, and some memorable monster designs. 3/5, more if you're an anime freak.

THE BATMAN: A character called "the Riddler" is murdering prominent Gotham City citizens, leaving clues for the vigilante known as the Batman to follow to uncover a wide-ranging conspiracy: but what is his final game? This latest iteration of Batman on film returns him to his "Detective Comics" roots, with less cartoonish villains, a noirish feel, and a brawling Batman with serious anger issues; it works. 4/5.

NALVANY (2022)P: Alexei Navalny runs for President of Russia on an anti-corruption platform, and gets poisoned, then imprisoned, for his efforts. Inspiring true story of a man using brains and bravery to fight the world's most powerful bully. This was a special screening with a 30-minute followup interview at the end; it goes into regular release next week. 3,805 Putin supporters rated it "1" on IMDB. 4.5/5.

THE NORTHMAN (2022): A Viking prince swears revenge on the uncle who killed his father and usurped the throne, and years later returns to Iceland to wreak his revenge. This visionary film may run a bit long and sometimes have trouble striking the proper balance between the hallucinatory and the lucid, but Robert Eggers still places you inside an alien culture better than any of his contemporaries: Valkyries and threads of fate are tangible things in this gloomy world. Lots of nifty violence too, though there are many slow parts. Definitely made for the big screen. 4/5.

THE BAD GUYS (2022): A gang of "bad guys"---a snake, a piranha, a shark, a tarantula hacker, and the suave wolf leader---attempt to "go good" to escape punishment after they're caught in a heist. Minor but entertaining cartoon caper, with crazy car chase sequences for the kids and humor for all ages. 3.5/5.

Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

That was a fun movie, and really showed Sam Raimi's trademark style.  I'm frankly surprised they got away with a PG-13 rating with some of the stuff he pulled off.  There were moments when it was really starting to feel like an Evil Dead movie.

I've not seen it yet. I am wondering if the bad reviews I've read of it come down to it not being exactly what they expect from a Marvel movie? Looking forward to getting to see it myself.

HAPPENING (2021): A high school student tries to obtain an illegal abortion in 1950s France. Slow to get started, but contains some scenes more gruesome than anything you've seen in a horror movie. Samuel Alito called it "the worst film of the year... a movie not deeply rooted in this nation's history and traditions." 3/5.

MEN: Harper (Jessie Buckley) rents a remote English manor house to recover after what could euphemistically be called a "bad breakup"; she finds herself haunted by a strange nude stalker and the odd and unsympathetic men in the nearby village. Starts off spooky, then Alex Garland pulls out all the stops in the bizarro final act; the psychological symbolism is obvious, but not everyone will enjoy the lack of an in-narrative explanation for the insane events. I'm also not crazy about the lack of subtlety of the title, which will doubtlessly provoke tired cries of "not all men..." 3.5/5.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK: Nearing the end of his career, hot shot pilot Capt. Maverick is called in to train a crew of the Navy's best pilots for a near impossible mission (against an unnamed country) to take out a uranium refinery. Will circumstances force him to join in the mission himself? I'll never tell, but 20 years later Maverick is back breakin' rules and shakin' fools in this thrilling but predictable air adventure. Has to be seen on a big screen. 3/5.
