Yep another food to discuss.  Does anyone like onions or onion flavored things.  For years I couldn't stand onions but kind of ended up loving them in the past few years.  I like them with fried potatoes the most.  One year I grew them in my garden and they were the size of softballs.

Practically any sandwich is improved by a little raw onion.

Salads too.

Omelets.

Breakfast potatoes.

Soups.

Being in Philly, I gotta have my cheesesteaks "wid" as opposed to "widout".

I always have to have at least one large red & large white onion in my fridge.

Fried onions on perogies, steaks, burgers and hot dogs. Or raw red onion on burgers and hot dogs. Actually, the best is raw AND fried onions on burgers and hot dogs. Raw red onion is also great sliced on sandwiches, or finely chopped and sprinkled on chili.

I can't think of too many meals I cook that don't have onion in them somewhere, even if it's just a pinch of onion powder. Soups, stews, curries, tomato sauce, meatloaf, stir fry, etc.

Red onions are my choice for raw uses, with Spanish coming in second. For cooking, you've got to have the basic yellow cooking onion. Your eyes will burn, but the extra flavour is worth it.

So yeah, I like onions.

Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

« Reply #5 on: January 30, 2009, 11:41:55 PM »

I love 'em, but the wife and kid can't stand 'em  Bluesad. Another simple preparation: cut off the top and bottom stems (or whatever the correct term for the root sprouts is), wash it all up good, put it on a piece of aluminum foil, pour a bit of olive oil on it (add some garlic cloves if you want), wrap it all up in the foil, and bake it for an hour or so at about 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or, alternatively, put it on the grill while you are cooking other stuff). The onion softens up and gets really sweet and extremely tasty. It can be added to whatever you are making--burgers, hot dogs, steaks, possum fritters, squirrel cakes, coyote pot pie, raccoon roast, etc. I add it to my fajitas, because I can't grill everything together since I'm the only one who will eat onions in my household.

It really depends on what I am eating them on. Some sandwiches I want a slice of raw onion on it while others I don't. I like like to saute them for burgers in the same pan I cook the meat in. It gives it a good flavor. Also they are a must on hot dogs for me. And I like to eat green onions by themselves sometimes.
My favorite variety is the sweet onion. They don't have that bite that others like white onions have. Also they make great onion rings.

SQUIRREL CAKES!?! Where is the love for the little furry guys?  Eating a chicken or a cow I can understand, but a cute little squirrel?  Cruel, people, just cruel.   Bluesad

And by the way, I love onions in everything except ice cream and cookies.

I used to love the "Blooming Onions" (a.k.a. 'onion blossoms') from the booths at the fall fairs.  Load on the toppings - chili, sour cream, hot sauce, melted cheese, etc etc - and it is 2800+ calories of pure bliss!  They are meant to be shared, but I could eat one all by myself.  Buggedout

Yes, on my hamburger. On my barbecue. But I couldn't have 'em, if I had to go to work the next day, as they made my breath stink. Of course, that was in the past. As I've grown older, my stomach has grown more sensitive, and I don't know whether I can eat 'em anymore.

I see no one has specifically mentioned green onions. They're good chopped up and in any type of salad. Though, there again, I had to be careful when I ate 'em, as they made my breath stink. And again, I don't know whether I can still eat 'em.
