I only tuned in for Bjork's performance, and she didn't win.  I kind of expected that, but I was still kind of mad.  Her dress was cool, though.

FInally saw Dancer in the Dark last night (instead of watching the Oscars) and wow.  That was an incredibly awesome movie.

Not that that's at all relevant to the board/this thread...

The Oscars were less annoying this year than they usually are--they only p**sed me off once.  They gave Best Makeup to the Grinch, which had some of the ugliest, most unpleasant makeup I've ever seen.  Jim Carrey's Grinch suit was okay I guess, but the Whos were absolutely hideous with those awful rat noses.

But hey, at least they didn't give Best Picture to Erin Brockovich.

Well, you get the general idea on what I think about the Oscars. I was pretty p**sed that THE GRINCH won for Best Makeup as well, so Josh Leman is not alone on this one. But sometimes the Oscars nominate the most worst forms of entertainment and the worst ones usually end up winnning. I totaly abandoned the Oscar awards when SOUTH PARK was nominated for Best Musical Number. For such a bad film, why did it have to be nominated? Were these people just running out of ideas or what? That and whenever an actor or actress wins an Oscar they tell a long BS speech that really bores the hell out of me.

I am really glad that GLADIATOR won Best Picture, but the rest of the recommendations is not worth it.

Not to say my ideas are better but I have some different opinions:
Gladiator was a good movie but not Oscar worthy in my view.  Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon should have won.  I haven't seen Traffic yet but if I saw it I think I'd want that to win.

South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut was extremely witty, even if you don't like the show.  It was a twisted satire on censorship that had surprisingly catchy songs.  Blame Canada was probably the wittiest, showing scapegoatism in society but my favourite is "What would Brian Boitano Do?"  It's just silly.

By the way Chris, I still think Freakazoid is a really witty show.  It's almost on par (but not quite) with MST3k in some episodes.  The title sucks though.  Plus Leonard Maltin had a funny guest appearence.

I caught Julia Roberts acceptance speech at the end, at it made we wonder why in the hell I should care.  I've given up on award shows, but then again, I've never won one.

Anyway, I wisely decided to spend the night playing CRAZY TAXI.

I refuse to live in a world where Bob Dylan wins an Oscar. I especially refuse to live in a word where Bob Dylan wins an Oscar and Ennio Morricone does not.

I've said it before,i'll say it agine. The Academy don't mean squat to me. I like what i like, and don't feel the need for a bunch of faceless rich butt smochers to verify or anoint my tastes. If we needed them to aprove our likeing of peculular movies...where would we be?

I was more interested in watching the Law & Order marathon then The Oscars. the only timed I did watch it was during commercals.

If they can get it down to 2 hours, it would be a whole lot better.

I felt the same way about GLADIATOR as I did about BRAVEHEART when it won Best Pic a few years ago.  It was a pretty entertaining movie, but hardly best picture quality.  CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON was a much tighter, better crafted movie, and even in its slow parts ever second counted.  GLADIATOR was sloppy in comparison.

In the same feeling as Stefan Robak, I myself do not try to say my ideas are better as well. However, I also feel that I must point out my agreement/disagreements with Stefan. But please bear in mind that I am not "shooting down" Stefan's opinions because I really can't do that. I am just adding my thoughts to what I think about his opinions.

1.) I agree that CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON should have won an Oscar. But lets be honest, has any foreign film won an Oscar in the United States? To my knowledge, not many. Why? It really depends. First, the film is made in a foreign country with a cast and crew that is literally a "no name" in the U.S. Another reason is that not many audiences want to see an Asian film with subtitles nowadays. An example of a fantastic foreign film is DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING (1972). It was a good movie, but that type of film will not be nominated for an Oscar because nobody in the United States knows about the director Lucio Fulci. Only the true film buff knows about Lucio Fulci, but for the "regular" film audience Lucio Fulci does not mean squat in the U.S. So I felt that the Oscar should go to GLADIATOR because that film was more looked at than CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. I also have not seen TRAFFIC yet, but I also feel that if it was a good film then TRAFFIC should have recieved Best Picture.

2.) Now I do not want to get into an argument about this one, but the SOUTH PARK film was really an unwitty comedy in my opinion. True, it took a twist on the area's of censorship and I like the way it went with that angle, but the rest of the film was like watching a garbage dump for about an hour and a half. Hell, it was like watching SCARY MOVIE, but contained animated characters and bad unfunny humor that was worse than SCARY MOVIE. As for being nominated an Oscar for Best Musical Number, well that was a complete hack job itself. The songs may have been witty and funny, but nominating a bad film like SOUTH PARK for an Oscar is like giving a gun to a bank robber. It is just not right.

3.) As for the mention of FREAKAZOID, I don't want to sound like a rude ass but that is completely off the subject. However, I feel the show is a bit witty and funny at times and I would definately watch FREAKAZOID over SOUTH PARK for sure. However, it was just not that good in my opinion. But, I distinctly remember that the comment I made to Stefan Robak about FREAKAZOID on the user comments area of THE CRAWLING EYE (1958) was written two years ago. And when I made that rude comment two years ago, I ended up apologizing to Stefan on THE CRAWLING EYE user comments after the rather harsh statement I made because of my rudeness. Also, I myself do not like Leonard Maltin due to his "idiodical" uses of film criticism so you would not hear me say good things about him either.

Well, that about sums it up for what I think. Basically, this is just two men conversing about what they think about the Oscars. That's all.
