Currently Eurpoean copyrights on sound recordings last for 50 years before falling into the public domain. With the Beatles recordings soon to become public domain, "interested parties" appear to be lobbying to have the terms extended to 95 years.
50 years is a quite reasonable copyright term, allowing the artist/creator to profit from the work during his lifetime. After 50 years, the copyright only benefits the estate or the music publisher.
