A movie I watched....wanna see it again.

Hello everyone! I'm new here, but anyways I have been looking for a movie that no one has heard of. The people who watched with me don't even remember seeing it.....mystery movie? lol.
In 2001 I watched a movie that (I was under the impression) was a new/er film intirely in black and white. The name of the movie was the name of the main kid in the film. It was sat in the WW2 era and was all about the journey that these two kids made from thier house to a relatives house to get out of invading forces paths. It was sat in Europe somewhere I believe, but along the way the kids go through a lot of depressing stuff. In fact the entire movie made you speechless  because of how depressing it was. The little girl (the older of the two I think) who was about 10-11 ends up hanging herself in what was left of a house they came across and spent the night in.
I know the little boy made it to his destination but I really don't remember anything else about it....sorry. No, I don't know who was in it (really the two kids mainly..hardly any adults) nor who directed/produced/wrote...nothing. Any help at all? Thanks in advance. I had never heard of the movie until I got there that night, I doubt this movie has ever made its way into a Blockbuster ya know?

I remember reading about this film. I'm fairly certain it was from eastern europe (I'm guessing one of the -stans) and made the art house rounds in the early 00s. But the name has totally escaped me.

hmm, I dont remember a bike. I think they were just walking. However it has been a while....8 years....since I saw this movie.

I'm thinking it could be 'Come and See',a Russian film from the mid 80's. It's one i have in my collection,but haven't got round to watching yet. It's meant to be super depressing,so i need to get in the right frame of mind to watch it!
Let me know if it's the one!
