I choose not to acknowledge the existence of any remake made after the year 2000.

I like the original of LHOTL. it's got a weird kind of "charm". but this remake looks like yet another pointless hollywood dumb-fest...

I have the original on DVD, but only for Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham's commentary. It's too ugly for me to watch that much even with the commentary track on. I'm not a fan of watching women being raped and degraded.

I'm just amazed that it's #3 at the box office this week. I guess this movie made a lot of money because they don't refund your money at any theater I've ever seen if you walk out before it's over...

Well, I actually saw it, so I can make a few brief comments.

First, I will say the humiliation, degradation, and rape stuff is WAY toned down from the original.  It's still there, but it's mainly shown as merely ugly and nasty, it doesn't keep going on and on as it did in the original.

The revenge sequence is, for a good chunk, more about saving their daughter than about revenge - I can't really call that a spoiler, since they show it in the trailer.  But yeah, the daughter is badly hurt but makes it back home.  This shifts the tone of the film noticeably.  There is still a bit of a revenge thing, just not as much.

Second, I'll say that removing the comedic relief BS from the original is an improvement.  The acting is also quite good basically across the board.  It's a solid remake, on the whole.  Not really great, but solid.  I'll also note one other change - the original is much bloodier and gorier as well.  This film has some nasty violence, but surprisingly little blood and gore.  There's one particular sequence involving a damaged hand where you just barely see what happens, but this actually makes it even worse.

And on one final note, I've mentioned it before, but I'll say it again.  The original Last House on the Left is actually a remake of the Virgin Spring.  Worth noting.

The original is a classic.  I don't have much hope for the remake, but I'll probably see it anyway.
