The Grossest Human Organ

I was watching Say Anything last night and got to the scene when Lloyd is in Diane Cort's bedroom.  He picks up what looks like a human brain and sniffs it.

Truth be told, I probably would've sniffed it, too.   

But it made me think of how gross the human brain actually looks.



It really is quite a hideous looking organ.
Heck, they've made movies where the evil creature is in the shape of a brain.

There are a lot of gross looking organs in the human body.
Which organ grosses you out the most?

Anyone who's ever watched a "film strip" in grade school science class knows that the grossest human organ is the smoker's lung. Eww, nasty!

Having seen just about every organ (I live being a biologist), if only in preserved form, the lower intestine creeps me out mightily.  The pancreas actually looks just like a pancreas should... long, yellow and knobbly. 
I'm personally quite fond of the kidneys. 

The worst thing I ever did was dissect a shark, their oil comes out and mixes with the formaldehyde to make a nasty foul-smelling slime that gets everywhere.

I'm gonna vote "liver". I think there's something slimy and disgusting about the liver of any animal. I don't understand why anyone eats liver on purpose.

I got a chance to see my own intestines once. No, I wasn't committing seppuku, it was at a radiology clinic, one of those deals where you have to clean out the intestines by fasting for 24 hours and then get the "barium enema". A thoroughly unpleasant way to spend 24 hours, but they let me see the image on screen and I thought "Well, now that's pretty cool. It looks exactly like it does in books."

I think one of the grossest things you see in the deli case is (beef) tongue. For some reason this is very popular in Jewish delis in New York. And it's just sitting there in the case and looks exactly like what it is.
