I don't drink for a number of reasons.  My Baptist upbringing taught me that drunkenness was a sin, and in my 4 years in the Navy, I saw otherwise intelligent, rational people do  incredibly stupid things with horrific consequences due to alcohol.  Then, right after I got out of the service, I had a dear friend decapitated by a drunk driver.

And on top of that, the few times I have sampled alcohol, I have found the taste absolutely nasty. TongueOut

So Dr. Pepper remains my poison of choice, and I continue to be high on life . . . . Cheers

Something about alcohol in the Armed Forces, it just doesn't work out well. I hear people say "If you're old enough to serve your country, then you're old enough to drink." Complete BS. You should hear the crap I get when I say that I think the Army should raise their drinking age to 23 or so. I also have seen stupid crap, one guy didn't want to go the the field so after everyone rejecting his idea of having them break his leg so he wouldn't have to go, he jumped off a 3rd floor balcony and is crippled for life. I think there are alot of kids that join in part because they know they'll have access to alcohol right away. Alcohol (on the male side) plays a part in 35% of all rape accusations, except in the armed forces, where in the Armed Forces it jumps up to over 85%. Basically, 35% of men accused of rape had been drinking OUTSIDE the Armed Forces, while over 85% of men accused of rape IN the Armed Forces had been. Not sure if I worded that correctly.

I know the Army, and from my limited experience with other branches them also, just has some weird attitude or outlook like it's a weakness for someone to not drink because they can't handle it/family history/whatever. As if you're more of a man if you get drunk and be a total idiot than you would be if you chose not to drink because you can't handle it.

That said, I have drank pretty much my entire life, and never has it caused my any legal problems or social problems. I am and always have been adamantly against drinking and driving, and am against drinking if there is anything going wrong in one's life (divorce, legal trouble, boss on your ass, warring with one's neighbors) or anytime strong emotions are involved. It's funny how some people can drink ALOT and OFTEN and never get in trouble or lose control or make an ass out of themselves, , yet some turn into instant idiot just from sniffing the cork of a wine bottle. The latter group of people often act as if they are out to prove they can handle it by drinking more and more often.

I got away from soda altogether and don't miss it at all. I do often buy Mt Dew if I'm driving back from Anchorage in case I get tired, but when I drink it, it's WAY too sugary. Caffeine these days just doesn't work well for me, one cup of tea after noontime and I can't sleep worth crap, one cup BEFORE noon and I'm so sleepy after lunchtime that I have to drink another cup just to make it until quitting time. Soda     makes me more thirsty, but, I did love it when I was a kid.

I LOVE tea in the morning. It has many benefits, as people can google for...
It has a coffee buzz with HEALTH benefits.

LOVE beer at night with my wife.
Wine just puts me to sleep, but beer just makes me jolly.

RCMerchant,

Look on the bright side.  At leat you aren't that Phelps guy.  One picture of him taking a hit off a bong and he goes from golden boy to pariah.  You can drink yourself stupid on beer, liquor, mexican p**s water, or whatever your poison is and no one will bat an eyelash.  But take a bong hit?  Smoke a cigarette in public?

LOOK OUT!

So what if you fall off a bus bench or two?  So what if you've woken up in your own rancid buttermilk puke?  So what if you've woken up in stranger's houses without your pants, covered in honey, wearing a tiara, and a smiley face drawn on your tallywhacker?  At least you're not smoking anything, like that Phelps guy, right?

Same here. If I've ever been dragged out for the night by some chick, I need a drink to relax. But then I always get into trouble, which doesn't help when I'm drunk, plus being completely psychopathic to boot. So, now I just get loaded and rat-soaked in the comfort of my flat.

I only started drinking when I was 18, but it's got worse and worse as each year has gone by. That's mainly down to periods of unemployment, bad relationships and my past really disturbing me. BUT, I don't want to stop. I'm going to die one day and if my life is not looking so rosy right now, so what? I'll just bow out sooner, a jolly drunk and all guns blazing.   Drink

It's too expensive and I don't drink for the sake of drinking, if I drink it's a social thing with the guys I'd take a bullet for.

The expense is one reason I could never figure out how people could be heavy drinkers of the hard liquor. Even beer, while you can always find places to serve cheap crap at a buck or so a glass, when the bar charges you $5 for a pint I can't see how anybody would feel like drinking more than one or two.

I like beer and the occasional wine, but wine I take only occasionally, not enough to even know the names of what I like (except that I pretty much don't like any whites). For me a beer splurge is to have two in the same week. As my wife is working part of the week in another city, I've been getting into this bachelor-night thing of beer, wings and a movie on the laptop. It's raised her eyebrows a couple of times when she found two beer bottles in the recycling bin.

I'm no saint and I actually started drinking beer when I was 15, because I was with an older crowd and NY State drinking age was only 18 then. But I've never been into heavy or regular drinking. Seeing drunk friends and hearing the stories made me wonder why anybody would ever want to repeat the experience after once waking up in a strange bathtub in a disgusting state. A couple of times while sitting around with friends drinking pitchers I found myself wobbly-kneed when I stood up, with my teeth feeling numb like I'd been to the dentist. It was not a pleasant feeling.

I been arrested for beating up garbage cans

Who won?

got caught with my pants done with someone's wife.

And that's another thing about alcohol. It may lower your inhibitions but doesn't it also severely affect, ahem, performance?

On the weekends I really enjoy a good dark beer, Sam Adams Black, San Miguel Dark or Guinness, also like to have a little bourbon in the evening. My favorite one is Jim Beam, but Jack Daniels and Makers Mark are very good too. I like the taste of the beer and the bourbon, the relaxed happy feeling side effect that 1 or 2 beers or a shot of whiskey gives me is just a fringe benefit, as has been said, all things in moderation.
