It may be something you've already ruled out, but I remember a poorly distributed movie called TROG, starring Joan Crawford, back in the late sixties early seventies.
I'm sure there's a lab scene in it.

TROG first came to mind for me as well....except TROG was discovered alive in a cave...and was in color.

Heres an ad for RETURN of the APEMAN (1944)

I'm still not sure if either of these is correct, I own Trog, and I somehow suspected that was it,
but I havent seen the whole thing to make sure (if I can find it that is!)
When I said I saw it in black and white, it was on a black and white tv, so it may have been sa color movie I'm not sure. Other caveman appearances: Encino man, Ice man, Altered states, The Quest For Fire...
But again, I'm not sure. By the way Bela didnt look like an apeman in that movie he looked more
like the rat faced man in the Stuart Gordon Masters of Horror episode. I'd appreciate other guesses

It could have been 1953's the NEANDRATHAL MAN...except...again....not on ice,or MONSTER on CAMPUS....yet again-not on ice. Both those caveman were ordinary professors turned into apemen by 'dabbling in God's domain."

MONSTER on CAMPUS trailer....

...and a pic of the NEANDRATHAL MAN.

 Here's TROG-

Incidently,Bela is NOT the Apeman in RETURN OF THE APEMAN. He was portrayed by Frank Moran.

Or mebbe John Landis's SHLOCK (1973)

Small | Large
