Loooong ago, on the BMMB (Stomp Tokyo) there was a thread about customized chess sets. You know, like the Star Wars and Civil War chess sets? If you could design yer own chess set-what would it be?

Mine-LUGOSI vs KARLOFF!

Insted of Black and White-mine would be red and green!
RED-Lugosi!

King-Dracula
Queen-Luna (Caroll Borland from MARK OF THE VAMPIRE)
Bishop-M.Legendre from WHITE ZOMBIE
Knight-Ygor!
Rook-Prof.Erik Vornoff from BRIDE OF THE MONSTER
Pawns-Dwight Frye as Reinfield!

GREEN-Karloff!
King-the Frankenstein Monster
Queen-Elsa Lanchester as the Bride,of course!
Bishop-Im-Ho-Tep:the Mummy
Knight-Fu Manchu!
Rook-Bateman-the butler in the OLD DARK HOUSE
Pawns-Dwight Frye as Fritz!
...oh yeah...as long as this is fantasy...the green pieces would be made of jade, and the red -rubys!
Ok...yer turn!

I've always wanted one of those fancy marble chess sets, with the big marble board and real artistic looking pieces, also in marble and maybe the black pieces in onyx.  Don't really have anyplace to put it though, and I hardly ever play chess.

Kaiju Chess – Toho vs. Daiei

Green - Toho
King – Godzilla
Queen – Mothra
Bishop – Ghidorah
Knight – Rodan
Rook –  Gigan
Pawns –  Steve Martin

Red- Daiei
King – Gamera
Queen – Jiger
Bishop – Gyaos
Knight – Guiron
Rook – Barugon
Pawns – ‘Kenny’

Like RC, ruby and jade would be nice.

And using Frye as the pawns in both sets is a nice touch.  Thumbup

Doc Savage:

King - Doc Savage
Queen - Pat Savage (okay, so Doc and Pat were cousins, but this is just a chess set)
Bishop - Ham
Knight - Renny
Rook - Monk
Pawns - 4 Long Tom pawns and 4 Johnny pawns

Since Doc Savage fought way more villains than you would need to make a chess set, the opposing set of pieces could be just a bunch of generic bosses, thugs, and henchmen, with a moll for the Queen.  Or maybe you could select which villains you wanted from various stories (e.g. John Sunlight, Tom Too, Sol Yuttal).

I'd like a Barsoomian set.   That'd look cool.

Judge Dredd:

King - Judge Dredd
Queen - Judge Hershey
Knight - Judge Anderson
Rook - Judge Sanchez
Bishop - Judge Giant
Pawns - Wally Squad Judges

The opposing pieces would be various villians. Judge Cal would be King.

I'd buy it!

Myself, I was working on carving my own set at one point, but the project fell apart.  I had trouble getting enough raw materials of the appropriate size, plus my tools were inadequate at the time.  Might go back to it, but the basic concept: I used purchased white cylinder wood to make the white side.  Clean, well-shaped wood.

The dark side I found random old wood sticks in the back yard and woods around my house.  They're discolored, malformed, and ugly, and of somewhat various sizes.  It looked pretty cool actually.

I'd do mine based on food:

King Crab for the King
A T-Bone Steak for the Queen
A Chilidog for the Bishop
A Pizza for the Rook
A Taco for the Knight
And pints of Ben & Jerry's for the Pawns

Man I'm hungry. . .

Mine would be based on the best kind of underpants people can wear:

The King and Queen: silk undies.
Everyone else: torn and shredded-what-is-peeking-out-there? kinds.
