I have no dog in this hunt, but at the same time, Scotland has been part of the UK for 400 years.  I don't understand why the sudden need to change.  Is British rule that oppressive?

Yeah I have no idea either. As an American, it would be a little hypocritical of me to challenge someone wanting to separate themselves from England though.

India, North America, Ireland, lots of the South Pacific, most of Africa, the Caribbean and Palestine.  Just some of the countries/continents that would take exception with your statement. My opinion is to let Scotland do what Scotland wants to do.

I'm talking about British rule today, not in the 19th Century.
That being said, of course I will respect the Democratic process, and so will the government of Great Britain.

http://mainlymacro.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/scotland-and-snp-fooling-yourselves-and.html

I don't know much about it, other than the little snippets I get from my girlfriend's Scottish dad.  I know the basic argument is 'screw the English' in some Scottish circles [like it has been for centuries] but also because they do have a bit of oil and natural resources which many Scots feel is going to fund alot of things in England instead of back into Scotland.  I don't know the truth of the economics of it all though.  The article above I only skimmed but seems like it gives a fairly even sided view on both sides of the argument.

But generally speaking: British rule isn't that oppressive, but there are reasons to be independent.  I know in Australia it means that we can be more independent politically, as there is an argument to be had for being a bit less dependent on British influence given our closeness with alot of Asia.  Not that we'd be distancing ourselves, but it does give us more freedoms to act 'as our own' politically, whilst still effectively maintaining ties with the 'Mother country'.  The fact that Scotland is fairly liberal and the English govt is not is no doubt playing a part in this process too one imagines.

Aye. I wonder a lot about this. I hope the Scots make a wise choice.

And on another subject...
