Hypnotic, ain't it?

Trying to track down a book I used to own -- I don't remember the title or author, but it seems like the sort of thing someone else on badmovies.org forums might have read.

It was a fairly slim paperback, and the cover art was of a tranquil lake with something too dark to clearly make out but with a hint of insect-ness to it rising from the middle of it.

The plot was a mystery, following a woman who worked for a tabloid newspaper a la the Weekly World News.  She's working the midnight shift manning the phones, jotting down the ramblings of those calling in for use as future stories, when she receives a call from a girl who just watched her brother get pulled into the local lake and chomped on by a monster.  The woman is so convinced by this girl's story that she talks her boss into letting her go to this lakeside town and investigate.

In town she receives all sorts of run-around, and people are dying.

It's eventually deduced/revealed that the monster is a giant dragonfly nymph, mutated by chemicals dumped in the lake by a pesticide company that had built a factory in town.  The reveal comes in the form of the giant dragonfly nymph (there were originally many, but as they grew larger they preyed on each other until only one was left) crawling up on land to molt.  After heaving its adult body out of its larval shell, it promptly suffocates and dies because of the square-cube law, it can't support its own weight out of water and it collapses the monster's respiratory system.

The woman goes back to the tabloid with the story, and I think is told that it's too unbelievable to print.

She also spends a lot of time thinking about how the calorie-rich food of the rural fishing community is going to leave her unable to fit in her jeans.

Anyone else ever read this book?

Sounds interesting.

Hmmm don't think its been made into a film. What was the main characters names? or name of lake? or name of town? I doubt it would be called after the monster but perhaps named after the location. Its a tough one to pin down with out names.

Saying that, you could always bullet point the main plot points and google them. A good chance that it may come up in a search result list.
