Another DVD I got for my b-day was the great double release of Rodan and War of the Gargantuas, best part both flicks have Japanese and American cuts!

Easily the best Rodan costume ever in this movie, once Godzilla began to go through his dork age, an age I find fun I admit but I think the best Godzilla is a vicious one that can be a villain or anti-heor, started to look goofy. The attacking Rodans is quite spectacular, but I remember it being longer, oh well I was a kid then. Interesting how I now notice with this better print that Rodan has a breathe weapon of sorts, a powerful gust. Seems a bit needless when they have those powerful wings.

I admit I think it's kind of neat to have the Megalurious monsters lead into the issue, however once Rodan enters the pictures the humans take back stage, which would become quite the trend. I think the human character were kind of interesting and had more potential than your usual kaiju human characters. Sure they're no Serisawa and Emiko from Gojira but I think Ishiro had a missed oppertunity here if he named the movie 'Megalurious' and had it more human focused, he did have a great hand for horror as I saw in Matango.

Classic Kaiju movie is classic.

You rvisted Rodan? So how's his wife and kids?

Kididding. I kid!

RODAN was made,as you said, before japenese giant monster movies went 'kiddie'.I think the reason they went kiddie is because kids were big viewers-and they misinterpertated that as makiing Godzilla into the big Bozo Show would draw more kids. Kids like their monsters straight. I think they got back on track with DESTROY ALL MONSTERS. But it was always always fickle. My favorite Japenese monster films are GOKE,the original GODZILLA,and,as mentioned,MATANGO.

I like "Rodan" a lot.  The beginning with the mysterious deaths in the flooded mine was scary when I was a young boy, and that part still has some good creepy parts even now.  The men being dragged to the beast in the flooded mine, and the bloody woman's shoe still stick in my mind.  Once the flying monsters arrive, there are some great scenes of destruction.

Plus, the end.  That ending, with the one Rodan returning to die with it's doomed mate, and the narrative by the protagonist (English language version), is both sad and satisfying.

Toho needs to put out a MONSTER box set.

I still need to see MATANGO Attack of the Mushroom People!

I had a rare old vhs tape about Yog, Monster From Space. I found it at a flea market years ago, 90's I think. Lots of monsters I didnt know about in that film. Its in Japanese. (good movie too)

Then again, I just found out about Zone Fighter about 5 years ago.  Twirling
