BBC weirdness for adults: the truly bizarre, very dark comedy of The League of Gentlemen, detailing the lives of the citizens of Royston Vasey.

Without a doubt, one of my favorite shows of all time!

Some shows that I always thought were kind of bizarre was the trend that (mostly) Hanna Barbera had going in the late 60's/70's of taking celebrities, giving them their own cartoons, and putting them in crazy situations that never made sense.  Some of the best:

*  The Three Stooges as The Robonic Stooges (they had Inspector Gadget-like abilities)
*  Harlem Globetrotters in space
*  Mr. T as the head of a gymnastics team that solved crimes (greatest show ever!)
*  The cast of Happy Days as time travellers
*  Laverne and Shirley in the army
*  Gary Coleman as an angel (although, to be fair, this one was based on a movie he did)

It was kind of like a strange combination of trying to cash in, but not quite trusting the source material...

I could have contributed this one earlier in the thread, but I'm too lazy to dig through it.

Cop Rock: For those not familiar with it, I'm not lying, this is a police drama musical series from 1990. Yes, a musical. Picture Land & Order but the characters break into song and dance every 5 to 10 minutes. I'm not joking.

This was a very ambitious project created by the man who also did Hill Street Blues. It actually managed to air 11 episodes.

I saw an episode of it in 1990 and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I saw the title and had to check it out, and what a strange experience. Not sure what they were trying to acheive with that one.

Many of them followed the Scooby-Doo formula, that usually required an ensemble of standard teenage types and a "funny" animal character in a situation that allowed them to travel around and have all kinds of wacky adventures in various settings.

They pretty much designed a new show around existing characters. Even as a kid, that seemed weird. Why does Mork have a pink alien dog? Why is Godzilla following a research vessel around? Where did these other characters come from? Why would the Duke Boys and Boss Hogg race around the world?

Count me in too. I remember Lancelot in his little trenchcoat and his partner, Mata Hairy getting into all kinds of mischief back in the day.

As a kid back in the 70's, it seemed the sky was the limit with kid's shows.  As a side-reminder of Lancelot Link, I remember seeing the show on DVD over at Border's awhile back.

Another show I thought was a bit strange (for it's darker, more adult oriented stories) was the Return To The Planet Of The Apes cartoon. It was no kids' show, it was heavier handed.

And, anyone remember the Fantastic Voyage cartoon? The closing outro to the show was the eeriest thing I remember...it was as if the lab had a mind of it's own and was doing it's own thing.   Great days, great times!

Weirdest show I have ever seen has to be Superjail. It's like walking thru the mind of someone on acid while doing acid yourself.

Sounds awesome.  Where do I sign up?  TeddyR     BounceGiggle
