This takes place in some sort of cavern or lair. There was a staircase guarded by a sphere that would kill you if you got too close. The guards were dressed in dark clothing with dark visors. There were a variety of prisoners, I remember a punk girl with a mohawk. It had a post-nuclear war theme. One day the prisoners revolted or something and one guy was able to get past the sphere and to the top of the staircase. Once he got outside it turned out there was vegetation, trees, etc and the world was not completely destroyed. I saw this movie like ten years ago but I can't remember its name. It's possible dark, cavern, or colony were in the title but I could be wrong. Any ideas?

Sounds kind of like an episode of The Outer Limits called "The Camp", but that was made after 1995.  Here's a video of the end of that show (The whole beginning and middle sections took place in an underground complex), unfortunately it's dubbed over in some other language:

Thanks for your reply,

That looks like a great episode of the Outer Limits, I am going to go watch it. Unfortunately, that isn't the movie that I was thinking of though.

The movie that first came to mind was FORTRESS (1993) with Christopher Lambert and directed by Stuart Gordon. Still some of the details do not seem to fit although I haven't seen this one since it came out 16 years ago so my memory of it is fuzzy (like I don't even remember Kurtwood Smith being in it).

So something like "Logan's Run," but updated.  There was a television series of "Logan's Run," but that doesn't seem to match up very well.  There is also a movie called "Island City" that is an imperfect match.

Every movie that takes place in a futuristic subterranian distopia ends this way. I want to say THX-1138, but I'm pretty sure there's no sphere in that.

Thanks guys, I guess it was so low budget that nobody else has seen it, heh. It does have similarities with THX and Logan's Run so I guess I should just re watch them. I'll check out Fortress it looks great.
