Matt Damon in the Glen Campbell part and Josh Brolin as the killer? Who's playing Lucky Ned Pepper?

These two casting choices are actually making me feel better about this film. Josh Brolin is an interesting choice to play the villain, played by Robert Duvall in the original.
But, are they going to beef up the part for Brolin. In the original, the part was certainly important, but it was not that big of a role.

As for Matt Damon, he is certainly a better actor than Glen Campbell. After my father and I saw the film together in the theater, my father, who never commented on a film we saw together, at least to me, actually complained about how wooden Campbell's performance was.

Now, the next big choice is who they get to play Mattie, the heroine, in the film.

Campbell was a bit of "stunt casting" He was popular entertainer at the time.  (Much like Ricky Nelson in Rio Bravo)

Sometimes stunt casting works. It worked (IMHO) in the case of casting Ricky Nelson in "Rio Bravo." On the other hand, it did not work in the case of casting Glen Campbell in "True Grit."

Except RICKY comes across laconic in RIO BRAVO, and in that wonderful, but silly Western, it works;  GLEN CAMPBELL's performance in TRUE GRIT (which I think is the superior film) is merely tolerable, and though JOHN WAYNE is the one we came to see, in one of his very best roles, KIM DARBY seems almost tolerated (I mean, is she likeable?) but really carries the viewer thru the film.  For me, TRUE GRIT probably ranks as an "endlessly watchable" film, but I'm very interested to see the remake.
