Lee takes over the director's helm from James Whale for this outing, and crafts a nice little story about father-son relationships -- something sorely missing from most Frankenstein adaptations. For really, as Ygor says here, the Monster is in effect Dr. Frankenstein's son, and in Shelley's original novel, it is the father's...shall we say, "cold" reception of his son into the world that drives the Monster to villainy, a motivation simplified to a defective brain in the Universal films."

Murnau (DER JANUSKOPF, a retelling of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Murnau is perhaps best known in the horror community for 1922's NOSFERATU) and Paul Wegener (DER GOLEM)."
