I know -- you're probably thinking "at least one of them has gotta be 'Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang'," but nope, it's not.

The first one might be from the late-'50s.  It's in black & white and it's about a man who'se in love with a girl, but feels that he needs a car to appeal to her.  She is also being courted by a jerk in an Austin Healey.  With the aid of a little girl next-door, our hero rescues an old wreck of a car, rebuilds it and eventually gets the girl.

The second is a color film from (IIRC) the mid-to-late '60s, that had little (if any) dialogue. There was a man in maybe his 30s, and a boy and a girl (neighbor kids?), maybe 8 or 10 years old.  The man rescues a junked old roadster (an MG-TC?) from a scrapyard, and restores it. I believe he paints it dark green, although since it's been 35 years since I've seen the film, I could be off. I don't recall much plot, just him restoring the car -- sort of "man overcomes rust" -- and then giving the kids a ride.

Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure that this one is Genevieve with Kenneth More and John Gregson.

Apologies but I think that the first one might also be "The Fast Lady" with Stanley Baxter and Julie Christie.

No, it's not Genevieve -- although I'd totally forgotten about that charming movie!  I should've mentioned that the "old car" in the film I'm wondering about, is a 1920s car; "Genevieve" is a 1904 car.  And the film in question is in black & white, set entirely in a village.

I'm going to have to pick up Genevieve, though. Thanks for reminding me!

No, not "The Fast Lady" either, but thanks for bringing it to my attention.  I just watched a fun chase scene on YouTube from "The Fast Lady", and it looks like I need to get the entire film

The first film I mentioned was black & white, all took place in a small village, was very understated (not at all madcap, like "The Fast Lady"), and the majority of the film was made up of the young man building the car, rather than driving it.  I don't know if that helps at all.
