While I'm here might aswell post this one. I've been loking for this for 10+ years. It used to be on at 8:30 or 9:30 on BBC 1 or 2 during the week. The series in general was about some kindof alien invasion. I can remember three things about it 1) The aliens or invading force are gradually "swallowing up" the countryside with some kindof massive black hole like thing which keeps expanding and swallowing up the landscape. 2) At some point a guy gets 'infected' with something, stabs himself and jumps into a resevoir which infects the water supply. 3) The very last episode concludes with one of the main characters standing looking at the big black hole thing swallowing up the landscape, a jet flies over and drops a nuclear bomb, and you see the whiteout from the explosion then the screen goes black and it ends.

I thought it was 'Last Train' but it wasn't...allthough that was good. I don't think it's 'Dark Skies' or 'V' as ive read over the wiki articles on them and none of the episodes seem to match what I remember above.
