My kinda toy...

« on: January 16, 2010, 06:53:29 PM »

Just saw this today with my mum for her birthday.  She read the book, I haven't.  I honestly liked it.  She didn't as much.  Apparently the movie leaves quite a bit out of the book.  I thought the movie was good enough, though, I think Peter Jackson has a little problem with CGI, it;s like he can't make a movie without it.  I mean, this guy goes from Dereks Don't Run! (Bad Taste) to a story about a girl who is raped and murdered and then looks down from "heaven" to help her family find out what who killed her.

Stanley Tucci did a great job in this.  Everytime I saw Susan Saradon I wanted to yell SLUT! (Thanks a lot Rocky Horror TeddyR )  Mark Wahlberg was meh.

Has anyone here read the book?  Anyone seen it yet?  Comments?

Didn't like the movie, haven't read the book. My problem with the movie is that it was the perfect oportunity for Jackson to scale down and do something in the vein of "Heavenly creatures", mixing the fantastic with the everyday and the horror. And it works great at first, but once the characters have been introduced and the plot enters the supernatural, it's like Jackson doesn't know what to do with it. CGI extravaganza? Detective story from the Great Beyond? Now and then it works again, as in the scene between Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci, or when Tucci decides to toss the safe on the local dumpster, but I found the ending specially idiotic.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

Didn't see the movie, and don't intend to. I'm pretty confident I would not like it. But I agree with your comments about Peter Jackson, Neville. Heavenly Creatures was a fine and unusual film. That film alone tells us that PJ has the talent to make a mark, and I did like the LOTR films for what they were. Unfortunately he seems to think CGI is obligatory.
