80s or 90s flick- sci-fi guns that make you explode?

I vividly remember watching this movie in the early to mid 90s on the movie channel.I can only remember certain parts about how it starts. The first part took place in a dry, arid environment and a few different guys ended up shooting each other with these guns that would make your body explode. One scene in particular has a guy lying on his back. They show him from the neck up because the rest of his body is blood and guts. He was still alive with a cigarette in his mouth and talking to whoever shot him before he died. I also remembered a space ship being flown by one of the fighters in this little braw either before or after. The planet, if not earth, looked kinda like mars, but everyone didn't have space helmets and could breath.  Can anyone help?
