This is one of the most impressive movies I've seen in a while, so I thought I'd start a new post on it.  BRONSON is streaming for free on Netflix if you have an account.

The story is a stylized biopic of the most violent inmate in the British prison system.  "Bronson" (who named himself after Charles Bronson) is a man who lives to fight, and lives for no other reason.  The real life prisoner has spent 36 years in prison, 30 in solitary confinement.

The story is repetitive: Bronson gets into trouble, is punished harshly, gradually gets released back into the general population and bides his time until he has an opportunity to goad the guards into a fight.  This could have become extremely boring, but director Nicolas Winding Refn changes up styles throughout, alternating realistic drama with expressionistic scenes.  Bronson tells a large part of his story in a monologue to an imaginary audience, sometimes dressing up in makeup to get his point across.  Scenes when he's briefly furloughed and lives in an odd brothel while street fighting on the side have a BLUE VELVET feel to them.

Critics frequently compared BRONSON to A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.  There are similarities, though they can be overstated.  Both films are highly stylized, both feature a totally unrepentant but strangely charming sociopath, and BRONSON uses classical music together with scenes of stylized violence as well as any movie since Kubrick.

Tom Hardy gives an utterly brilliant performance in what is ultimately a one man show.

This movie was, frankly, just exhilarating to me.  The only downside I see is that the working class British accents can be hard for American ears to decipher.  those who didn't like it complained it was too "arty," so if you absolutely hate artiness then stay away.  Most people here, I think, will find there's enough action and spectacle to keep them entertained.

Trailer has "embedding disabled" but it's worth a look.

I'd give it a try if I were you. 5 out of 5 stars from me.
