I was just thinking, there is, or used to be an X-rating (replaced by NC-17, which is pretty much the same thing). Then there is XXX, hardcore porn. Is there actually such a thing as a XX movie? I was just thinking that you can look up X-rating and XXX-rating on google and come up with plenty of results, but nothing on XX. I'm guessing there just isn't such a thing.

Nope, no XX rating.  There's no official XXX rating either, it's just a marketing tool pornographers came up with.

True... at least according to the MPAA.

Although I do think their is a porno agreement with the rating since x seems like softcore (a movie with porno content) and xxx is often refered as hardcore (a porno with no actual movie).

Actually, XX is a prequel to a Vin Diesel movie.  TeddyR

Seriously, I used to wonder about this myself.  Nowadays, I think X doesn't really apply at all.. there's NC-17 for X and there's simply "hardcore porn" for XXX.

Or maybe they still use XXX for liquor..  TongueOut

In South Africa, our [cough] adult films get ranked X18. A real step forward from the old government who made you the guest of the state if you were found with an X rated VHS, Betamax or a 8mm / 16mm print in your possession. It could either be a pornographic film or whatever production they termed "against the will of the State".  Buggedout Buggedout

I remember a videotape that came out that said it was rated XXXX.  Guys would come into the video store where I worked and rent it thinking it must be REALLY dirty if it had four Xs instead of three.  In reality, it was just another porn movie.  Once you get to "X", you're at the end of the line.  Any additional Xs are just porn industry marketing, as Rev. Powell pointed out.

I figured as much. I was just wondering if there was some actual market of films that were somewhere between softcore X/NC-17 stuff and the hardcore stuff. Not that I'm going to run out and look for such a thing, just a random thought I was having and thought I'd post it.

I recommend you go straight for the XXX movies.  We had one in the store where I worked called UBANGIS ON URANUS.  Try that one.  Probably my favorite porn title ever.

And if you drink that beer, you will find out what Mexico has done with its sewer water. Not a fan.

Oh, I disagree.  I think Dos Equis Amber (not vouching for their other varieties)  is one of the better Mexican beers.  Bohemia is the best and there are many, many worse (including insipid Corona and a really, really awfully swill called Cerveza Caguama---avoid any Mexican beer with a turtle on the label).

Dos Equis is pretty decent. My humble opinion, the best beer in the world comes from that pair of islands off the coast of Europe. Newcastle, Guiness, Harp, Smithwick's, Bass. Those people know how to make beer.

Not to turn this into a beer thread---though it's as subject almost as near and dear to my heart as bad movies---but I put the British in second place, behind the Belgians.  Germans are third.  Fourth?  Americans, once you discount Budweiser, Coors and Miller.

Interestingly enough, the "X" is also a major symbol used to express one's commitment to a Straight Edge lifestyle choice (a commitment to never drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, partake in recreational drugs, abuse prescription drugs or engage in promiscious sexual activity). "XXX" or"xXx" or "sXe" or "SXE". It dates back to the Hardcore punk scene (hXc) as it's explained here below.

From Wikipedia:

"The letter X is the most known symbol of Straight Edge, and is worn as a marking on the back of both hands, though it can be displayed on other body parts as well. Some followers of Straight Edge have also incorporated the symbol into clothing and pins. According to a series of interviews by journalist Michael Azerrad, the Straight Edge "X" can be traced to the Teen Idles' brief U.S. West Coast tour in 1980.[13] The Teen Idles were scheduled to play at San Francisco's Mabuhay Gardens, but when the band arrived, club management discovered that the entire band was under the legal drinking age and therefore would be denied entry to the club. As a compromise, management marked each of the Idles' hands with a large black "X" as a warning to the club's staff not to serve alcohol to the band. Upon returning to Washington, D.C., the band suggested this same system to local clubs as a means to allow teenagers in to see musical performances without being served alcohol. The Teen Idles released a record in 1980 called Minor Disturbance with the cover shot being two hands with black X's on the back. The mark soon became associated with the Straight Edge lifestyle. In recent years, more venues and clubs have begun adopting this system.

A variation involving a trio of X's (XXX) is often used in show flyers and tattoos. Also, it can be a pun based on the fact that three X's are a cartoon way to signify alcohol or poison. The term is sometimes abbreviated by including an X with the abbreviation of the term "Straight Edge" to give "sXe". By analogy, hardcore punk is sometimes abbreviated to "hXc". The X symbol can be used as a way to signify a band or person is Straight Edge, by adding an 'x' to the front and back, for example, the band xDEATHSTARx."

- more militant straight edge although I do agree personally.

- I like this take myself.
