I don't know if this has already been discussed. If so, I apologize. In brief, the plot concerns people walking at the end of the world. Sometimes they meet somebody. Apparently, the only people who survived TEOTWAWKI are rednecks and cannibals. The only black person to survive is a thief, naturally. I watched this last night, having read the book when it came out. The film was just as dismal and depressing and equally boring and simplistic. All the apocalyptic stuff shown in the trailer never materializes in the film, so no effort is made to fill in any back-story. Vigo Mortensen has to shlepp along what looks like an extended Belt Parkway with another whiney little brat to the East Coast. Personally, I'd have bbq'd him in the first 15 minutes. The highlight of the movie is a five minute scene with Robert Duval. The film makers claimed they filmed this on location but the backgrounds are obviously cgi and not even that good with flickering matte lines in several scenes. Cinematography is grey, dark grey, greenish grey, and dark. Pacing must have been done with a metronome. NOTHING HAPPENS in this movie. No tension, no suspense, no excitement, just the longing for this picture to be over. Trees fall down. People mope. People whine. Charlieze Cheron (sp) gets disgusted and just walks away. (The smartest move in the whole movie.) Vigo dies. The End.
I do not know what the appeal of this book/movie is. An end-of-the-world movie don't need monsters, mutants, aliens, robots or any of that stuff to be effective, , but it needs SOMETHING. In this movie the world doesn't end with a bang or a whimper, it ends with a snore.
