Since we have a thread about bands who got famous for cover songs, I'd like to present you with some of my favorite cover songs.

This one is good but not quite up to par with the original. Sill pretty cool, though.

Metallica "The Wait" (Killing Joke)
Small | Large

I think this next one supasses the original. Michael Gira's cover is quite good too.

Swans - "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (Joy Division)
Small | Large

Another Swans (under the moniker of Skin) cover, this time it's "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (The Stooges)
Small | Large

Jesu covering Pink Floyd's "Capter 24"
Small | Large

Can't think of anymore at the moment.

Cool.  Some of my faves:
Cyndi Lauper "I Drove All Night" (Roy Orbison)
Small | Large

The Damned "Alone Again Or..." (Love)
Small | Large

Joe Strummer "Redemption Song"  (Bob Marley)
Small | Large

Duran Duran "White Lines" (Grandmaster Flash)
Small | Large

Heart w/Layne Staley "Ring Them Bells"  (Bob Dylan)
Small | Large

Many people have covered Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"; I like John Cale's version the best

Children of Bodom's Aces high is good, if you're a melodeath metal fan (Except Arch Enemy's version, which sucks! Hatred)

And two different versions of Fear of the Dark

As a general rule I detest all cover songs. There are very rare exceptions.

The Cowboy Junkies cover of Sweet Jane is halfway decent. I just like the lazy feel and the spare production.

The Talking Heads cover of Take Me to the River by Al Green and "Teenie" Hodges is outstanding.

Even though I particularly hate it when a band tries to make a punk or metal version of an old song, I actually like the Iron Maiden cover of Jethro Tull's Cross-Eyed Mary better than the original.
