That's what happens when the looney left runs a state for decades on end . . . huge State employee benefit programs, confiscatory taxes, and environmental regulations that could have been written by Al Gore . . . businesses have been fleeing to Texas for 20 years now, to avoid all that nonsense.

A few of them come to Texas . . . they either find their conservative roots, or move to Austin and help "Keep Austin Weird"!

California needs to legalize and tax the sale of marijuana.  Boom, they're the richest state in the nation overnight.

I was living in California when they had the "emergency recall election" that put Schwarzenegger in office. Through manipulation of the power grid by Enron that led to rolling blackouts all over the state people were manipulated into anger against then Gov. Gray Davis. Republican Darrell Issa helped get this hatchet job going, but wound up being replaced by Republican Schwarzenegger because Terminator 3 opened up and his popularity was upped. A disgraceful recall election was made even more so in the resultant circus where several people threw their hats in the ring, including a porn star and the late Gary Coleman, to get attention. Lt. Governor Bustamante got my vote, but the state voted for Arnie instead.

So this was all a Republican power grab from the get go. George W. Bush's economic non-policy turned more and more destructive over the years as he started wars no one would have to sacrifice for and kept lowering interest rates on Wall Street. Always remember that the GOP dug this hole we have to struggle out of. Never forget that. Shouldn't be too hard to remember since they still don't know anything about leadership and show their lack thereof when they stick to Bush's same economic policies.

The novelty of having the Terminator as governor must have worn off by now since he hasn't been able to save that state at all. He's supposed to be some sort of outside Republican, but apparently doesn't have the knowhow to save the state economically. Hopefully they start taxing the wealthy and big business a lot more now since that one percent of this country's population controls half of the country's wealth. Follow the money because most working class people don't have mush.

Oh yes, we ALL know how much high taxes and the demonization of business promotes economic growth!

Do you have a single shred of proof of this alleged Republican conspiracy, or is this just more class warfare and Bush bashing from an angry leftist?

Sorry indianasmith but I gotta say this, what do you call calling everybody on the left wing loonies?

That's what happens when the looney left runs a state for decades on end . . . huge State employee benefit programs, confiscatory taxes, and environmental regulations that could have been written by Al Gore . . . businesses have been fleeing to Texas for 20 years now, to avoid all that nonsense.

In response to this I can't say who controlled the legislature for the past twenty years, but since 1983 theres only been 4-5 years of a democrat in the governors office. Also I should note the California Governor has the power to veto bills passed by the legislature unless theres a 2/3 majority to override the veto. So unless the Democrats really have had an over 2/3 majority in the legislature for the last twenty years I can't imagine them completely controlling the state.

After reading the wikipedia page it still sounds like he was just a ineffective governor and the republicans capitalized on it. If the people didn't want him out then there would have been a greater effort by the democrats to keep him in office, but they started distancing them selves almost right away.
Now I admit Arnold the republican replacement hasn't done much for california since then, but Arnold is really only a republican in name only.

I have to concur, Pennywise.  The article does say there were accusations of collusion between various energy companies and the Republicans seeking to recall Davis, but presents no proof.  And, as a teacher, I can tell you that no college, UIL, or Academic competition that I am aware of allows Wikipedia to be used as a source because its articles are sometimes inaccurate and/or biased.  Did Republicans take full advantage of the crisis to put one of their own in office?  Duh!  What political party wouldn't!  But Davis never would have been replaced had it not been for his own incompetence, and the appearance he gave of being completely out of touch with his state's voters.

As far as the "I lived through it" argument, well, I lived through the Bush Administration, and I have a huge admiration and respect for our former President from Texas.  Do you share that?  Apparently not.  Personal experience is ALWAYS colored by our personal convictions and philosophy.

Now, I don't use the term "loony" to describe all leftists.  There are many on the left that I can respect, even if I may disagree with some of their basic philosophy.  But California leftists, or at least those that I have listened to and seen on TV, seem to be more radical, more Marxist, more hateful, and, well, just more nutty than the overall Democratic demographic.  Yes, California has had some Republican governors - Republican in name, anyway.  But it is the legislature that passes the laws and writes the budgets, and it is the ridiculously high taxes, enormous state employee pension entitlements, and draconian regulations they have created that are driving businesses away from California left and right.  And more of the same is NOT going to restore California's economy, or the American economy.

We always hear about how the government should do more to help the poor and unemployed.  Contrary to popular opinion, Republicans do NOT want to starve the poor, kill old people, or re-enslave blacks, or impoverish our children.  The bottom line is this: the most effective way to help the poor is to give them a JOB, not a handout.  And the only way to make sure there are jobs for them to have is to legislate in such a way that business prospers.  If we make America a profitable place to do business, then there will be jobs in America again.  If we continue to demonize corporate America, and punish them with ridiculous regulations and confiscatory taxes, they will continue to outsource jobs in order to avoid said regulations and taxes.  Let business DO business, and everybody wins!

I generally agree that California badly regulated.  I'm not going to get into whether that's because there's too much, too little, or just the wrong kind/poorly implemented - I think it is enough to say the regulations are bad and should be reformed in some way.  Preferably by consulting experts on what will likely actually work, not based on what politicians WISH or HOPE would work (something both sides inarguably do).

Right?
