Western lawmakers turn sights on endangered wolves
BILLINGS, Mont. – Two decades after the federal government spent a half-million dollars to study the reintroduction of gray wolves to the Northern Rockies, lawmakers say it's time for Congress to step in again — this time to clamp down on the endangered animals.

To do so they are proposing to bypass the Endangered Species Act and lift protections, first enacted in 1974, for today's booming wolf population.

Critics say the move would undercut one of the nation's premiere environmental laws and allow for the unchecked killing of wolves across the West.

But bitterness against the iconic predator is flaring as livestock killings increase and some big game herds dwindle.

And with state efforts to knock back the predators' expansion stalled in court, senators from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah want to strip wolves of their endangered status by force...

I have always disapproved of the hunting of wolves.   They are majestic and intelligent creatures that have roamed North America from The Dawn, and just as much part of the Earth as the indigenous peoples who revered them for their mystic qualities.  The day the wolf vanishes form the Earth, is the day that a true legend has died.

I see that lawmakers are at it again trying to force their will on State rights.

And once again, technology will prevail as wolves are hunted from choppers. And if this passes, then wolves will be relentlessly hunted by choppers, snowmobiles, and other vehicles they can't outrun, and entire dens of pups and their mothers will once again be wiped out a repeat act of one of the most shameful practices ever.

Makes me sick.

It'd be one thing if there was significant evidence there were enough wolves to maintain a healthy population in these states.  But there isn't.  So, basically, they're just trying to wipe wolves out again.  The number of wolves in these states is tiny in the scheme of things..  I think Montana has like 1500.  And ranchers are already allowed to kill aggressive wolves on their land.  And they get compensated for lost cattle.  If the compensation is too low for some reason, that's an entirely separate issue.  As far as hunters saying "Oh my god no, the big game population is too low now!" - that's just stupid, as most of the time it has been artificially high and basically no one in these states is hunting big game for subsistence (as some do in Alaska).  So to those hunters who want to do it for other reasons, I say too ****ing bad if the pickings are lean now.  Deal with it.

Several states are banding together to try to undermine existing federal legislation.  I'm not sure how this means state rights are being violated..?  This is also a case where proper protection of a species may require nationwide efforts, so it seems like a good case for federal management.

You did not read the article and you talk from a perspective of ignorance.  These "problem" wolves are the progeny of wolves many in the states troubled by the problem originally resisted the reintroduction of such way back when.  Reintroduction is the operative word here, m'dear, and if States' rights were violated, it were some decades ago.

Now before this thing goes South, let me explain. I did read the article. It implies that a multi-state effort is underway to remove wolves from the Endangered Species List.  State lawmakers are trying to force aside Federal law. I got it.

Statement in question:
I see that lawmakers are at it again trying to force their will on State rights.

I did not specifically accuse Feds of victimizing State law.

And, I should have made that clear: my bad.  I meant to say, that there is most likely a division among state lawmakers in Montana over this issue (and the other states involved.)  Naturally some are pro-wolf, some anti-wolf.

And, if a State lawmaker is working to undermine the rights of his\her own state, (in this case, undermining his\her fellow state lawmakers who want to Federally protect wolves)  then that justifies my statement in question (though I worded it wrong.) Hope that helps.

No need, I tried to explain above as best I could. I don't always say the right thing the right way, dosen't mean it was deliberate. No biggie. Have one on me  Cheers

Actually this is part of a vast lib'rul conspiracy to destroy america and turn it into a socialist/communist/godless/fascist/nazi/muslim regime.

See, wolves symbolize independence, self reliance and other things that we lib'ruls can't stand, so we've decided to wipe out wolves as a way to eliminate symbols of things we can't stand.

Wolves today, eagles tomorrow. Soon we'll have eliminated all creatures that symbolize traditional american values, then we can carry out our master plan to turn america into the aforementioned socialist/communist/godless/fascist/nazi/muslim regime.
