Angle: Muslim law taking hold in parts of US
LAS VEGAS – U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle told a crowd of supporters that the country needs to address a "militant terrorist situation" that has allowed Islamic religious law to take hold in some American cities.

Her comments came at a rally of tea party supporters in the Nevada resort town of Mesquite last week after the candidate was asked about Muslims angling to take over the country, and marked the latest of several controversial remarks by the Nevada Republican.

In a recording of the rally provided to The Associated Press by the Mesquite Local News, a man is heard asking Angle : "I keep hearing about Muslims wanting to take over the United States ... on a TV program just last night, I saw that they are taking over a city in Michigan and the residents of the city, they want them out. They want them out. So, I want to hear your thoughts about that."

Angle responds that "we're talking about a militant terrorist situation, which I believe it isn't a widespread thing, but it is enough that we need to address, and we have been addressing it."

"My thoughts are these, first of all, Dearborn, Michigan, and Frankford, Texas are on American soil, and under constitutional law. Not Sharia law. And I don't know how that happened in the United States," she said. "It seems to me there is something fundamentally wrong with allowing a foreign system of law to even take hold in any municipality or government situation in our United States."

Dearborn, Mich., has a thriving Muslim community. It was not immediately clear why Angle singled out Frankford, Texas, a former town that was annexed into Dallas around 1975...

As far as my own motivations, I recognize Yahoo might be characterized as a stupid outlet, not always for me, but nonetheless, I have used a free email over there for 12 or more years, and I've gotten into the habit of reading... and citing, their news stories which are of myriad caliber.  They certainly reflect mainstream thinking (or puzzlement).  Smile  We all need to communicate the things we think might be important to those we care about.

If ever she gets asked about this by a real reporter, she will give here usual response. "I never said that".

This lady says whatever pops in her head. She likes to say things that she thinks will rile up her base. She runs from reporters, denies her own words, lies,... sad thing is she may win. Reid is not loved in Nevada.   TeddyR

I have a problem when someone tries to whip up hysteria. There are many Muslims in this country who just want to live their lives and talk like this makes crazy people do crazy things. She is an embarrassment. I have no love for Reid either but this lady has no place in government.

I feel sorry for the people of Nevada.

Interesting you brought up Reid.  Bill Raggio, one of the top Republicans in the Nevada Legislature, yesterday endorsed Harry Reid and really put the slam Angle.

Well, I grew up in the Novi/Northville area.  Was there until I was 18.  Dearborn was about 20 miles from where I lived.  Yes, there are TONS of arabic people in the area, especially Dearborn.  The largest population of arabs in the United States lived in my area - though few people realize this for some reason.  Probably because most of the early Arab immigrants were Christian, not muslim.  I feel "arab" has become too associated with "muslim" in America - since there are more Christian arabs in America than Muslim ones (almost 2/3 are Christian).  I believe Dearborn is mostly Christian arabs, though a lot more muslims have immigrated in recent years.  In any case, the city is only about 1/3 Arab, meaning *maybe* 1 in 7 people there are Muslim.  And this is a large city, of almost 100,000 people - you're telling me the 75,000+ non-Muslims (not to mention the non-radical Islamic people, of course) allowed themselves to be put under anything resembling Sharia law?

I can tell you at no point did anything remotely resembling Sharia law ever exist there.  It's a complete lie.

Quote
"The fact that Sharron Angle believes American cities have been taken over by militant terrorist organizations that are ruling our citizens under Sharia law shows a terrifying lack of connection with reality and a willingness to subscribe to conspiracy theories that demonstrates she's far too extreme and dangerous to represent Nevada in the U.S. Senate," spokesman Kelly Steele said.

Exactly.

She's also running a television ad claiming "Reid voted to use taxpayer dollars to pay for Viagra for convicted child molesters and sex offenders."

Small | Large

You don't have to be a moron to realize that's a misrepresentation.  I guess she's targeting sub-moron voters.

This makes me glad I don't live in Nevada anymore.  I can't imagine any other candidate the GOP could possibly run who could turn me into a Harry Reid supporter.

She talked about conservative people using "Second Amendment remedies" if they don't win next month and has never apologized for suggesting using violence if our democratic system doesn't work out in their favor.

Republicans are still going to vote for her here anyway even though it was metioned in a local newspaper here that they wish they could vote for someone else. It just goes to show the terrible lack of character and integrity among local GOP voters that they haven't the moral fortitude to get someone else on the ticket they'd rather vote for.

It's quite sad really. But Angle seems pretty nutty, and conservatives love her here. It doesn't matter what she says at all, they'll vote for their own no matter what.

I assure you there were many, many sane GOP members who supported her opponents in the primary.  I know some of them.  They just lost the vote in the primary.

Also, Bill Raggio, one of Nevada's most influential Republicans, has reluctantly thrown his support to Reid over Angle, even though he's never supported a Democratic candidate in his life. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/07/bill-raggio-endorses-harry-reid-slams-angle_n_755109.html).  Angle clearly does not represent all Republicans, or mainstream Republicans.  Frankly, I suspect the majority of her support comes from uninformed people who usually don't vote.

I despise the Democratic majority and what they have done to this country, but she sounds like a person I would have a hard time supporting.  I am alarmed over the growing influence of fundamentalist Islam, and have been for some time, but at the same time, I do recognize that most Muslims are peaceful people who simply want to live their lives and raise their children in peace, the same as the rest of us.

At any rate, in three weeks it will all be over, and maybe this country can settle back into some semblance of normality.

I can sympathize there. I hate the republicans for what they've done to america and the way they serve the richest 2% of americans while spitting on the other 98%.

I certainly don't want muslim law taking root in america as I consider islam to be even worse than hardcore christianity. I'm a little more worried about hardcore christianity taking over american law for now, as that seems a more likely scenario. I remember when that animated garden gnome , mike huckabee, said he wanted to rewrite the law and constitution to make it in line with biblical law.

I guess that means people who eat shrimp and lobster would be rounded up and eliminated along with the gays, as the bible claims that eating shellfish is an abomination, just like being gay.

I also guess anyone who wore clothes made of more than one fiber would have to be eliminated too, as the bible says that's a no no too.

Likewise women had better get used to being sold into marriage without their consent, and some people had better get used to slavery as the bible says both those are okidokie.

I sure don't want islamic religious doctrine made into law, and at the same time I'd fight a war to keep biblical ideology out of the law too.

Personally I wonder if some people are making up horror stories about islamic religious beliefs being made into law to distract from  the attempt to force christian values into law...

Sorry I am late on that.  I advise you to exercise restraint and not respond to Indiana's comments.

The reason I did not chastise Indiana is because his posting habits are well established and he never blatantly trolls.  The comments he made are as close as he ever comes to not being a perfect gentleman.

However, we have had problems recently with unregistered guest posters coming in and stirring pots.  That's not to say they are the only ones who cause trouble, but obviously registered members whose personalities and posting habits are well known will not raise as many alarms.

This did not really make the news and if it did it may have helped the GOP save some face in the midst of Angle's more and more extreme rhetoric. The anti-radical part of the GOP apparently can't get the same airtime as their radical leaders like Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, etc.

As for Muslim law "taking over" in the U.S., that can't happen. The legal nightmare they would face from The Constitution and Supreme Court would assure they would have to follow the same laws that the rest of us do.
