I found a copy of Barbara Steele's Nightmare Castle under the uncut title, Night Of The Doomed, so I gave it a watch again, and really came to appreciate this fine horror film as Steele's best, as well as one of best filmed of any movie of that time.  It had a great story and absolutely awesome cinematography. AND, Ennio Morricone's chamber music score ran chills down my spine in a way most music can't.

Steele is at her best as she plays two sisters, one beautiful and innocent, the other beautiful and evil, and she's fun to watch either way, a lot of fun.

I could go on forever, but just say that, of the 60's era Gothic films, this one wins the prize for it's atmosphere and story. And it's also the best 'revenge from beyond the grave" films I've had fun watching.  If you haven't seen it, SEE IT.

Barbara Steele is the ultimate scream queen, three cheers for her!   Cheers

I don't think I've ever seen a Barbara Steele movie. Yet one more area of obscure and bad film in which I am deficient. Will I ever get caught up? Probably not.

NO....Nightmare Castle is a very good movie. It has very good cinematography, a very thick Gothic atmosphere, and a very sinister plot that remains mostly ambiguous until the end, when you realize that the supernatural has indeed taken over.

Of the myriads of 60's era B&W chillers, this one takes a more serious approach at horror.  Surely it has a cheesiness factor to it on some fronts, but by and large it's a serious stab at the supernatural.

Of note, is that the  castle used for the film was also used in Andrea Bianchi's Burial Ground which IS an obscure and bad film (as you say) and they make mention of the castle in the subtitled interview on the Shriek Show DVD.

Point well taken in this case  Cheers
