Dude I just heard myself!  This is a sad day in the world of slapstick comedy, he is the Godfather of it as far as I'm concerned.  RIP Mr. Nielsen, thanks for the endless laughs.  I'll set the punch line for the next poster who gets it in honor of his life in comedy...

He's dead...surely you can't be serious...

Surely we should honor Leslie's memory by repeating one of his funniest jokes here?

Here's a great story about Nielsen from the early 50's science fiction program Tales of Tomorrow dealing with a mishap during a live broadcast:

It was "Appointment on Mars," starring a very young Leslie Nielsen. At the end of a tense drama, Nielsen's character has been stabbed by the bad guy as they stand on the Martian surface. The final scene was supposed to show Nielsen shooting the bad guy, and then a fade to black from the stony landscape of Mars. The wounded Nielsen was supposed to pick up a pistol in the foreground, and shoot the other guy upstage, in the background. But the gun wouldn't fire or was empty or was the wrong gun! He pulled the trigger a few times, and then, supposedly dying from his stab wound, decided to limp and crawl all the way upstage over the rocks to choke the villain to death!

Very sad, indeed.  I will also miss him for his part in the best movie of all-time: Creepshow.

That is truly sad . . . he made me laugh more times than I can count.  Thanks for all the fond memories, Les, and may your eternity be full of peace - and laughs.

Ozzymandias speaks: I remember he told this on David Letterman once. He said the other actor was Brian Keith of Hardcastle and McCormick and Family Affair.

Ozzymandias has spoken!!!

Too bad.  He was a mainstay of films I enjoyed for my entire life.  He started out his career in fairly serious roles, and he was pretty good in them.  But it was the dead pan comic roles I'll always remember him for - Police Squad, the Naked Gun films, Airplane!, etc.  He's even one of the few bright spots in the newer Movie films.

On the upside, he was clearly still "with it" and in pretty good health until the end, and he died surrounded by friends and family at the age of 84.  We should all be so lucky.

He'll be missed.
