This is kind of strange, I just got disc one of the Venture Bros Season 4 and it won't play in my DVD player.  I put it in and the DVD player says the Disc is dirty, but I look at it and the disc seems pretty clean to me.  Hell, almost brand new (which, considering the series just came out a few weeks ago, it probably is.)  But it won't play in my DVD player OR in my computer.  I just find that really odd.

Usually when I get a DVD that won't play, there's an obvious reason (like a large scratch or two, or the disc is broke.)  Well, granted, I've never tried playing a broke disc, but still... you get my drift.

Guess I'll just send it back.  Still find it puzzling though.

It might be the DVD player itself, cuz I got a new DVD, Toy Story 3, but the DVD player won't play it.

Might be a pressing error.  I've seen them a number of times.  It's relatively rare on high budget releases like The Venture Bros., but it still happens.  On low budget releases, happens a lot more often...  I've personally had it happen twice.

General rule of thumb with electronics: unplug it from the power point and try again.

I've never seen a DVD player specifically mention a dirty disc before, so that's kind of wierd!

Two tests: Try it in another dvd player [if you have one] if it works, then its either a formatting issue with what your DVD player can read, or the player is being funky.

But 90% of the time, unless the laser is on the fritz, turning it off and on again at the power point [leaving it off for about 5 mins] will fix the problem.

My guess would be a manufacturing defect with the disc.  Not terribly uncommon.

I've seen this happen before . . . my parents said a DVD woouldn't play on their player, but it worked fine on mine.

Yeah, that's another thing about manufacturing defects.  Sometimes they're minor enough that a player with really good error correction can handle it, but others can't.  Or it might be just one player doesn't "like" a certain disc for some reason.

It's just about the only thing I miss about VHS tapes.  Of course, they had the downside of getting completely ruined (especially the audio) when played a lot.

Sometimes you can rub a thin film of toothpaste on the disc and then wipe the stickiness off, then try it and it'll fill in the scratches enough that it'll play.  I've tried it before and made it work.

Well, I couldn't figure out what the deal is, the other disc I got that day worked fine, so I just reported this one as damaged and sent it back.

I have a double disc of Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull ~ the movie disc plays well on my player but the disc with the extra features plays only the 'making of' part of the disc, nothing more. I brought the disc to work and it plays fine here. So much for my region free, three months old DVD player.
