Songs that bring on the waterworks?

Two others are GOING HOME by Dire Straits and LIVE IS LIFE by Opus. Those always hit my emotional centre hard.

Roses For Mama, a 1978 song by C.W. McCall, who also had a huge hit with the song "Convoy" in the earlier 70's.  It was around 1974 or '5 if I remember right. 

I'm not a country music fan, but I remember hearing it a LOT on mainstream radio back in the day, as I guess it was one of those songs that had that sort of transcendency.  Also based on a true story.

LIVE IS LIFE by Opus

Growing up in Germany back in the day I learned to hate Live is Life by Opus with great passion. It was such a huge hit here and especially popular during beer fests in those huge beer tents. People would go NUTS over the song, climbing on tables, stomping their feet while clapping hands like those wind-up monkey dolls with cymbals.

Then there was the time we went camping and across the lake somebody would BLAST that song, looped, a couple of hours every night. Worst torture ever  

Sorry about that but I rate Live is Life as one of the worst songs from the 80s, right next to Don't Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin

When I read the subject line, I thought you were talking about songs that made you pee the bed.  Now I'm disappointed.

 

Why did I only see this post now?

I just discovered, after watching footage of the 1995 Rugby World Cup final in Johannesburg where South Africa won that the song The World In Union as sung by Ladysmith Black Mambadzo and P J Powers makes me blub big time. I do blub but on that day, South Africa was united as never before or since.

BLESS THE WINGS THAT BRING YOU BACK by The Moody Blues also makes me a bit misty-eyed: the song makes me think of Princess Diana for some reason.

Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks (1974).  This song made me cry as a kid.  When I heard the lyrics "goodbye Michelle, it's hard to die, when all the birds are singing in the sky" I would just fall apart.  Mainly because my name is Michelle and also because I never felt loved by my family when I was a child and here is this guy feeling sad that he's departing the world and leaving Michelle behind.......well it just had me sobbing until I couldn't breathe.  It still chokes me up even now, although I haven't heard the song in God alone knows how long.

These days it would have to be "One" by U2.  That song leaves me in a dribbly emotional mess, even though I love it so.

I agree about that song KB: very sad indeed and it is quite possible that Jacques Brel was dying when he wrote it as Le moribund. Terry Jacks' If You Go Away is also very sad.

You're not the only only one, Killer Bees. 

I was 10 in 1974 when this one played on the radio,  and as one who was just beginning to learn about life and death in those tender years, I also cried when I came to fully understand the meaning of the song.

And yes, it hurts to listen to it even now.   

I too felt unloved as a kid-I couldn't talk to or with my father about anything.
Any little interruption, and little thing I or my mom needed him for, always met with a sea of verbal abuse and condescension.  My mother did everything to placate him, and swam in a sea of complacency for fear of upsetting him, until she finally saw the light in 1980 and filed for divorce out of being plain sick and tired of the whole thing. She woke up.

Anyway, this is mainly about the song, and not about us, but just to let you know you weren't the only one who felt unloved. I too know how much it hurts. [[HUGS]]

A bit newer, but both the original and the reprise of I'll Cover You from RENT.  This is probably one of the only times I have cried at a song or a movie.  It's just so sad....  I mean, just watch the

reprise	Small | Large

.  How can you not cry?!?!

It's Not You by Halestorm.  There's probably a lot of guys tearing their hearts out by playing this one over and over again after they found out their girlfriends put them on top of the trash heap.  It also makes me sad because I remember the first time one of my old GF's told me I no longer had a sapce on her hard drive anymore...
