the Us coverage of this is non existent al jezeera english can be seen here.

The guy they just kicked out had been there since the 80's. He is now flying around the world trying to find a country that will take him. Unlike with iran, there is very little speculation that there are other "hands" in this as no one really has any interests oil, ME peace etc, in this tiny African country.

Many are saying this could spread to places like Egypt and Algeria. One can only hope though, I would point out that a democratic Egypt would most likely not be at all pro US or our "interests".

The country was very repressive but the economy is what has done this. or a combination thereof.

as with Iran Twitter has had a big role as has youtube

This does bring home Indiana's point in the PALIN "Blood Feud" thread, about how fortunate we are to be here.

indeed.

They are letting the guys plane refuel in Italy but not letting him land there. No one wants this guy. I guess he will end up in Saudi or Qatar.

edit: he's in Saudi Arabia.

Most likely reason is it is in Tunisia and very few of my fellow countrymen know Tunisia exists let alone trying to locate it.  Second, many that I know are more conceited.  Not openly or intentionally, but until something directly affects them they don't see it or care.  Case in point on country confusion, I have had people tell me they have been to Tunisia when they went to Tanzania.  Also, had one saying that someone from Indonesia was called an Indian.

In the US this is like exactly what both sides of the spectrum have been hoping for, a genuine rebellion against dictatorship in the arab world.

Maybe it looks to much like the one in Iran last year and they are like "ahh they've seen this one already".

It's being covered plenty in the US news.  Possibly at the very beginning Al Jazeera was on top of it first because it's "local" to them, but just Google "Tunisia revolution" and you'll see results from the Times, Post etc.

I've seen it through Yahoo! and such but not through major media.  I should probably check more often.

It happened pretty darn fast... I'll give you credit Lester, you're the first person I heard mention it.  But I don't have cable anymore and I don't know how quickly CNN and so forth were on it.

^ WSJ article. When people talk about "supporting regimes" I think people understand the political connotations but there are on the ground things that happen because of that "support". Generally when it's a "regime" those things are not good as this article, written by a guy attempting to do human rights work in Tunisia, illustrates.
