Hmm.. got some polish sausage that's been in the freezer for awhile.

Anyone know when that stuff will go bad? (Freezer burn, I think they call it.)

Ahh, probably shouldn't risk it. Just sometimes I buy stuff and don't eat it as often as I'd think I would.

I know, this sounds really stupid to some, but honestly, I don't normally have this problem.  99.9 percent stuff I buy I eat in pretty short order (except sometimes canned goods, been know to forget I have them sometimes, but hell, canned stuff keeps for several years, so no problem there.)

I once had a can of some god-awful Campbell's Soup (Cream of Celery, or something) that sat in the back of my cabinet sooo long it swelled into something resembling a weird metal soft ball.

I would throw out the sausage.  You don't say how long it's been in the freezer, but if ice crystals have formed on it, it's more than likely gotten freezer burned.  It's probably safe to eat, but might not taste that great.

Wow, someone remembers my stuff!

But, yeah, I'm going to pitch it.  I just hate wasting food.  That was drilled into my head when I was younger (which partially accounts for why I'm so heavy now.)

Serves you right for eating sausage with polish on it.  Twirling Wink

Well, how long has it been in there? Months? Years?

If it's been a few months, then it's probably fine.

Well if it's freezer burned, you'll know because it will be covered in frost.  Thaw it out and see if it still smells good, or at least not bad  TeddyR

My experience with freezer burn is: it doesn't taste nearly as good as it used to.  Toss it.

Yeah toss it.  Unless it is an airtight package it will not last past maybe 2 - 3 months.  Airtight you can get a bit more out of meat.  However, if you need a guide as said above if it has frost on it forget it.  It will taste beyond off  in flavor.

This thread reminds me of this exciting blog Steve, Don't Eat It!.

Steve hasn't added a new eating challenge in a while.

I guess he shouldn't have eaten that tree brain...

I always liked the pickled pork rinds and the larvae.  Not so much the items but his humorous way of writing the article.

Rather than waste it, give it to your dog.  They eat anything and seem impervious to spoiled food.  If your dog turns his nose up at it - burn it and bury the ashes at a crossroads!!! Buggedout Buggedout

Just a note of caution: onions and garlic are toxic to dogs.  So are various byproducts of decay/spoiling.  You might want to think twice before giving questionable human foods to dogs or cats.
