A.J. Bauer mentioned this in another thread and I found myself realizing how much I do this. I know some members have posted pictures of themselves from time to time, but I still have such a hard time not picturing members as their avatar. I can't seem to unsee:

Rev. Powell as Robert Mitchum
Newt as Sigourney Weaver (although the nickname is Newt I can't stop doing it)
lester as a young Tom Hanks

And a host of others. It amuses me to think that others are this way and that at one point, when I had a picture of Rick James as my avatar that people pictured me as a light-skinned black man with long Jeri Curls.  BounceGiggle

Does anybody else suffer from this affliction?

For the record, I don't post pictures of myself out of concern for my fellow board members. I don't want the guys getting jealous and I don't want the ladies fainting and potentially injuring themselves. Call it an act of compassion.

lester as a young Tom Hanks.

Everytime I see Tom Hanks, I think Lester.  Thumbup
I kinda like it when people keep the same avatar, you get strangely used to them.

I still get angry everytime I see Lester smooching Daryl Hannah in 'Splash'...
It should be Doggett, not Lester...  Wink

I can only imagine RC as Lugosi. All right, from time to time I remind myself that: Hey, he's not Lugosi....oh, right...

I think of Doggett when I see Elvira. And that's his SIG, not his avatar.

I'm just glad nobody equates me to the Adam West Batman. I'd feel horrible about that.

Only thing is my avatar is supposed to dance but I can't upload a working .GIF file.

AHD as Willie Wonka.  Burgomaster as the Burgomaster.  Torgo as Torgo.  Paquita as a zombie dripping blood from her mouth.

I imagine DarkSider as Rick James.

I actually do look like Robert Mitchum.  Well, Robert Mitchum if you ran over his face with a dumptruck and left him out in the rain.

Actually I quite prefer it when people keep their avatars the same so I can tell who they are.  Something always seems off when someone starts posting with a new avatar pic.  I still think of Andrew as the bright green monster thingee, and I have trouble picturing him as Godzilla.

Huh? I AM Bela Lugosi! Really.  TongueOut

I always picture the Rev as Robt.Mitchum. And All Hallows as Willie Wonka -(he's got that good natured/totally insane thing going! Gotta love it!),Trekgeezer as an old Capt.Kirk....lots,actually...and I have seen pics of them but still-!...then again-I've seen photos of some of the members, and I think of them that way. Dogget,Circus,Sister Grace,Trevor (of course, who has always used his mug),Now that I know what Bee's looks like,I have that smilin' face stuck,Ash, Dennis,Andrew-our mighty leader. But-actually-I identify most with their avatars.

I've seen pictures of Ronnie yet I always think of him as Lugosi. I also think of Rev. Powell as Robert Mitchum, allhallows as Wonka, Menard as a set of grinning teeth, etc.. Does this mean people think of me as the Radiation Specialist?

I haven't gone with that one in awhile so you inspired me (as of this post) to go back to it.   BounceGiggle

AHD, obviously Willy Wonka.

My first avatars were female: chibi Hinata Hyuga and Amelie Poulain :P.

I think my av from some time ago would be cooler to equate me with than my current one as cool as Torch is (Timothy Carey and Tiny Tim looking menacing is just more appropriate for me >.>)

Lester seems to be a common one. The couple of times he's mentioned shaving his head, my first thought has been "Lester's not bald, he's....oh, wait."

Still, Tom Hanks is an improvement over picturing him as the Small Wonder kid.

Most of the members who have a consistent avatar, I would picture as their avatar. Robert Mitchum, Gene Wilder, Sigourney Weaver, etc. The exception would be Darksider, who is the "I'd buy that for a dollar" guy. No matter how often he changes his avatar, that one just suits my mental picture of him. And Indy, who I picture as Teddy Roosevelt, and not as a mosasaur.

I also find myself, in at least a couple of cases, forming mental images based on user names. I'm pretty sure Flick James is not black, but his handle evokes that image. Fortunately, I know he's bald, so I don't picture him in a Jheri curl. TeddyR

Is it bad that I thought Doggett was a girl when I first joined the forum?  Just because of the Elvira picture.  I've sorta learned now that people's pictures don't necessarily have anything to do with what they look like. TeddyR

I've made the same mistake. Adding to the confusion, his real hair are even longer than Elvira's wig ;)

But I usually never equate members with their avatar (unless they use a real pic). I form mental images based on their posts. Somehow this works best for me.

Maybe just once, just for fun, we should all post a picture of ourselves as our avatars? Smile

My avatar is a giant brain. I think it suits me rather well, but making that costume might take a bit too much work.

I picture ulthar as Herbert West, Re-Animator. I have no idea what he really looks like, so that's who I picture when I read his posts.
