Okay, so, my son just turned 3 years old less than two months ago. He can play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on keyboard perfectly. I've played it for him with him watching only a few times, and never put any effort into trying to teach him how to play it. He just figured it out on his own between figuring it out by ear and memorizing it. My wife and I were astounded and had to catch it on video. He just did it in front of us and were said "how in the hell did he do that? He's 3 freaking years old?" He's our first child so we're wondering just how advanced this is, a little or a lot. I can't resist sharing:

Thumbup  My son (currently 5) has a lot of odd talents too.  At 2 he could put together a 50 piece puzzle at record speed.

I seem to remember figuring out how to play MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB on my grandfather's piano.  But I'm sure I was much older than 3 . . . probably more like 6 or 7 years old.  You could have a musical prodigy there.  Congratulations!

He's a crack up. He also has a toy drum and I guess he's seen something on tv or somewhere with a drummer clicking off a song, because he will click the sticks together and say "1,2,3,4" before banging away. He also will bring toy instruments to my wife and sometimes before clicking off like we're a band. It's hilarious.

Aw! Aside from being adorable, I think it's pretty impressive!  I know some adults that couldn't get a tune that close.

That is VERY cool, Flick!   Smile

Aside from a few pauses, he was playing in perfect 4\4 time.  He shows a knack for learning and if honed properly, this could get really big!  Here's to the next classic piano star!  Cheers

OMG how totally and utterly gorgeous is your little boy  Cheers

You should be very proud Flick.  I don't know if he's gifted but he's obviously very right brain oriented which means he's extremely artistic.  You and your wife need to encourage that in him.  He could be the next Mozart.

At the very least, he could make a good living from doing something that he loves.

Don't tell my wife that. She hates Jerry Lee Lewis. She's more of a Buddy Holly fan, which might explain why she was into a geek like me.

Thanks all.

The next Billy Joel then? He can play the piano, do some boxing, ride motorcycles, marry a supermodel.

BounceGiggle Billy Joel's cool, I just hope he's better looking.

Actually, it's hard to tell what instrument he may gravitate to, he's fascinated with ALL musical instruments. I have a guitar, a mandolin, a tenor banjo, and an Irish tin whistle and he's interested in all of them. He doesn't get how to get a sound out of the whistle yet though. Yet.

Very cool, Flick.  Watching them do amazing things is the big pay-off for all the garbage we have to 'endure' (dirty diapers, spilled drinks, sibling rivalry, etc).

This is one of the HUGE advantages I found about home schooling. Aside from comments on relative effectiveness of institutional school vs home school, etc, *I* am the one who gets to witness all the cool little milestones.  I'm with them and get to share in their joys.
