Just curious on this. Noticing a fairly strong military presence here and wondering if there is some kind of correlation here. A follow up question: If you are/were in the military: Did being in the military enhance your appreciation for bad movies or did watching bad movies make you feel like enlisting?

I was going to join, for college money, but I was physically unfit (too short, poor eyesight, severe asthma, lousy heart).

Four years in the U.S. Navy, 1982-1986.
Those were the glory days!

And, when I got out, they paid for my college.  It was truly a great chance to see the world, grow up, and do some serious living.

I still dream about being aboard the Lockwood, even though she has been scrap for 10 years now.

If you're feeling like a bit of nostalgia, you could always pick up this ol gal for the right price:

7 1/2 years in the Army, but if I had it to do over again, I would have gone into the Marines instead.

Civilian. My Grandfather was in the US Army, some of my friends were US Marines.

I also salute and support all the brave soldiers here.

6 years in the U.S. Navy. There was good and bad about it, but I don't regret it for a second. I never had a problem with the "ultimate sacrifice" end of the bargain, but I'm just too independent-minded to have made it a career.

I'm trying to think of how bad movies may have influenced my military service or been influenced by it, but I can't really come up with anything. I've always made fun of the absurd situations, which is probably why I love bad movies. The military has no shortage of absurd situations, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I tried to enlist as a Marine aviator after Top Gun came out but I had abysmal apptitude scores. They told me I'd be lucky to fly a desk. However they did ask me to enlist as a cryptologist/code breaker which looking back might have been pretty cool. I was a lunkhead though and told them I wanted aviation or nothing. I got nothing.

I'm a civilian, however I do have great respect for those who have served their county.

People love to romanticize being in the military. You did what you did. I served six years. I'm not asking for recognition, and have no interest in anybody patting me on the shoulder and expressing their gratitude. This is supposed to be a free country, meaning no compulsory service. This means that no person's life is more important or more meaningful because they made the decision to serve. I got my college paid for and some other useful benefits out of the situation, so I was compensated. I don't need anybody to suck my dick because I enlisted, and I don't expect it, and I definitely don't share the attitude of many of my fellow veterans that somehow I am a better American than somebody who didn't serve. f**k that.

But anyway, may experience in the military was pretty cool and I definitely am glad I did it.

U.S. Army Reserve.  I spent the summer of 1982 in boot camp at Fort Dix, New Jersey.  As a reservist I was a Scout-Observer.  The best part of the job was when we went on patrols and I got to man the M60 machine gun mounted on the jeep.
