I have been looking for this bad sci-fi for years. All I can remember from it is a guy find an alien gun of some type and the more he shoots it, the more he turns into an alien. At one point, he pulls a piece of metal from his chest. It might have been from turning into an alien.

Wow, that is one bad movie.

The one I am thinking of, if I remember right is almost all outdoors and in a desert.

This is "Laserblast" (1978).

There was also a cheap copy called "Deadly Weapon" made, but it did not include the alien angle.  Nor did the boy slowly become more and more an alien-zombie.
