So, I went to see Saxon in my hometown last night on their "Call To Arms" world tour promoting the new album of the same name. I got right down to the barrier once again and headbanged for all I was worth! The first act on was a band called Fury UK, who were local and their singer/guitarist frontman was excellent. He was a total fretboard fingering, axe grinding, shred god! I can't say enough great things about the guy, except I don't have a clue what his name is. Fury UK were on for about 40mins and then next up was Wolfsbane...

Blaze Bayley is a complete a***ole. Don't get me wrong, he's a strong vocalist and good at whipping a crowd but throughout their whole set last night, Blaze Bayley decided to pick on......ME! Inbetween songs he kept saying that "I looked strange", was I "really from Manchester", "Or are you from much further away?" and that I "didn't belong"!? What the hell is that about?? I've paid money to see a concert and I get embarressed infront of hundreds of people! They even changed the house lights to focus on me! So, I now officially hate Wolfsbane....On the way out Blaze was sat at a table signing merchandise and I told him to "go f**k himself".  TeddyR

Saxon were on about 9pm, sounded great (were monstrously loud!) and did a 21/22 song set with two encores. Biff Byford was funny as usual with his stage banter and the audience were totally into it. I mean we were loud as hell and sang every word of every song! Nibs Carter gave me one of his pics and Biff also told us that the show was being filmed for a DVD! So I'm gonna be on it! Yay!  Thumbup

WOW. I haven't been to a metal concert since 94 when I say White Zombie. He was good. I DID get arrested at a Suicidal Tendencies/Megadeth/Judas Priest concert in 89!  TeddyR
The Wolfsbane guy sounds like he's full of himself. f**k em. I alwys enjoyed Saxon-old school NWOBM.
Let me know when the dvd comes out! I gotta have it!!!!  hot

Yeah, Circus, Saxon are still cranking out quality old skool NWOBHM. They occasionally made a few missteps (Rock The Nations was pretty bad IMHO), but overall, they're pretty solid. Hey, did they sing "Broken Heroes" that night?

Blaze Bayley sucks! I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan, and I still can't imagine why the hell they got him to replace Bruce Dickenson. Thank God Bruce is back! I've seen Youtube footage of Blaze in a fight with a heckler. I used to think the guy provoked him, but after hearing your story, I wouldn't be suprised if Blaze provoked it.

Unfortunately voltron, they didn't. I was hoping they would, and also "heavy metal thunder". The set was pretty much the same as they had played in Nottingham two nights prior, apart from the excellent "Hungry Years" being substituted for "Attila The Hun".

Setlist - 13/04/2011 Manchester Academy

Hammer of the Gods
Back in 79
Never Surrender
I've Got to Rock (To Stay Alive)
Call to Arms
Solid Ball of Rock
Demon Sweeney Todd
Attila The Hun
Play It Loud
To Hell & Back Again
When Doomsday Comes
20,000 Feet
And the Bands Played On
Denim & Leather
Princess of the Night
Encore:
Crusader
747 (Strangers in the Night)
Encore 2:
Strong Arm of the Law
Wheels of Steel

I would've liked to hear Dallas 1 PM, but it still sounds like a pretty good setlist. I love Denim & Leather. It is THE headbanger anthem, if you ask me.

I've been on a big NWOBHM kick as of late, actually, though I must admit I lean more towards the doom end of the spectrum (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General, etc.). Satan is a great NWOBHM group too. Generic name, yeah, but I actually find that to be part of their appeal (also, awesome guitar work and a style that startlingly prefigures thrash metal years before that particular subgenre came coalesced and rose to prominence).

I'm glad you had a great time even though Blaze Bayley was a jerk to you!  I bet Blaze isn't even his real name.  That's what I would have said to him on the way out "Hey! I bet Blaze isn't even your real name! - HA!"  I'm sure he was just jealous because you look more like a rock star than he does.

Hehe, cheers. His name is Bayley Alexander Cooke and he's all fat and bald now.
