To paraphrase T.S. Eliot, "April is the weirdest month..."

MAKE-OUT WITH VIOLENCE (2008): "Skillful blending of genres combined with a premise of genuinely romantic necrophilia make this movie 100 percent weird..."--PD

FILM FESTIVAL DOUBLE FEATURE: THE LAST CIRCUS [BALADA TRISTE DE TROMPETA] (2010)/RAINBOWS END (2010): "It’s not '100% weird,' as the Dallas Film Festival synopsis implies (amateurs should never try to read the notoriously tricky Weirdometer—Rainbows End barely noses over the 55% mark), but as an unexpected comic gem and a warmhearted celebration of human eccentricity, it’s well worth your attention."

THE OREGONIAN (2011): "Two people walked out about thirty minutes into the experience, during the 'rainbow pee' sequence, a long bit where a bearded wheezing man stops by the side of the road to relieve himself, and his urine stream changes color from yellow to red to green to black.  (Ironically, this was possibly The Oregonian's best and funniest sequence, and the walkouts left before the punchline)."

TOD BROWNING’S LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (1927) & MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (1935): "Even from a stills-only reproduction, it is clear that Midnight is the original American Goth Film.  Chaney’s vampire, partly inspired by Werner Kruass’ Caligari, is a make-up artist’s delight, and an actor’s hell.  Fishing wire looped around his blackened eye sockets, a set of painfully inserted, shark-like teeth producing a hideous grin, a ludicrous wig under a top hat, and white pancake makeup achieved Chaney’s kinky look."--AE

More weird stuff for your consideration.

POOR PRETTY EDDIE (1975): "In it’s opinion of Southern hospitality, Poor Pretty Eddie falls somewhere between Deliverance and 2000 Maniacs."

SUBLIME (2007): "For all these flaws Sublime is worth watching, though probably not the night before you go in for a colonoscopy."-KD

TOTO THE HERO (1991): "Toto the Hero paints a portrait of a life wasted in lifelong envy and resentment, but manages to be whimsical and life-affirming at the same time." Certified weird!

TOD BROWNING'S THE BLACKBIRD (1926): "...a typically deranged underworld melodrama from the Tod Browning/Lon Chaney canon."-AE

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (1933): "Alice completists owe it to themselves to see this version which manages to be “trippy” some 35 years before the widespread use of hallucinogens."--SS

SUPER (2010): "It’s primarily a comedy, but the heavy doses of drugs, violence, and relationship drama make for a confusing watch."-AK

BRAZIL (1985): "Gilliam’s genius in Brazil was to recast George Orwell’s propaganda-ridden nightmare 1984 not as some disaster that might happen in the distant future if humanity is not vigilant, but as something that may have already happened, and gone unnoticed."

TOD BROWNING'S WHERE EAST IS EAST (1929): "...representative of the blue collar surrealism that both Browning and Chaney espoused, and can be best enjoyed with a heaping plate of elephant ears and cotton candy, along with a well-worn copy of 'The Interpretation of Dreams.'"-AE

Finishing up the weirdest month...

SMASH CUT (2009): "Even with way too much eye shadow slathered on, crossover porn star Sasha Grey has a doll-like, almost unreal prettiness, but she comes from the Connie Mason school of emoting (there’s the mandatory H.G. Lewis reference for you).  It’s amusing, in a schadenfreude sense, to watch the aspiring starlet monotone her way through Hamlet’s “poor Yorick” speech while holding a severed head; but wouldn’t be doing my critical duty if I didn’t advise readers that Grey keeps her clothes on at all times—that may be a deal-breaker for her hardcore fan base."

THE CASSEROLE MASTERS (200?): "These two short worthwhile segments, both animated, rescue The Casserole Masters from the 'beware' rating it would otherwise earn.  If I had tried to watch Masters from the beginning, without being obliged to review it, I would have given up within five minutes, because the rest of  the movie looks like home video of some Dadaist frat boys noodling around on a Saturday afternoon."  NOTE: This movie is embedded on and off site for viewing in its entirety.

DEAD MAN (1995): Upgraded to Certified Weird! "In Dead Man, a measured journey into an odd, somber, dark and funny wilderness of the spirit, Jarmusch created a myth with staying power. Filled with poetic images like Johnny Depp reclining with a slaughtered fawn, Dead Man has proven a mysterious power to linger in the memory."

TOD BROWNING'S THE THIRTEENTH CHAIR (1929): "Serious awkwardness mars this film, a product of the transition from silent film to the new, imposing medium of sound.  Because of that awkwardness The Thirteenth Chair is not Browning in his best form, but he still manages to make it a curiously personal, queer con."-AE
