The Grinch movie...hmmmm...I think people often flock to a seasonal movie because no matter what the content its, you know, seasonal.  For me its not as insanely bad as people make it out to be.  Still, I think the world would have been fine without it.

I did see Xmen in the theater and I think Scary Movie.

01. $260,044,825 - How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Missed the point of the story, IMHO.  The Whos looked hideous.

02. $233,632,142 - Cast Away
Never saw.

03. $215,409,889 - Mission: Impossible II
Never saw.  Tom Cruise.  John Woo.  No.

04. $187,705,427 - Gladiator
We're supposed to look upon the spectacle of slaves forced to fight to the death and say, "Cool!"  Kiss my ass, Ridley Scott.

05. $182,811,707 - What Women Want
Saw about half of it, seemed like a fairly harmless chick flick.

06. $182,618,434 - The Perfect Storm
Never saw.

07. $166,244,045 - Meet the Parents
I despised every character in this movie.

08. $157,299,717 - X-Men
Eh.

09. $157,019,771 - Scary Movie
Never saw.

10. $155,464,351 - What Lies Beneath
Never saw.

11. $137,748,063 - Dinosaur
Never saw.

12. $128,078,872 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Never saw.

13. $125,595,205 - Erin Brockovich
Never saw.

14. $125,305,545 - Charlie's Angels
Never saw.

15. $124,115,725 - Traffic
???

16. $123,309,890 - The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps
No.

17. $117,559,438 - Big Momma's House
No.

18. $115,654,751 - Remember the Titans
???

19. $113,330,342 - The Patriot
Never saw.

20. $106,834,564 - Chicken Run
I really, really wanted to like it, but it was just not good.

Yikes, another bad movie year for me.

Cast Away, Gladiator and Traffic are good, the rest are awful for me. I haven't seen every film the whole way through, but I saw enough to stay the hell away, left in utter puzzlement that people PAY to see crap like Charlies Angels??

DOMESTIC GROSSES #1–20

01. $260,044,825 - How the Grinch Stole Christmas - slightly better than I expected but no great shakes. Definitely shouldn't top this list.
02. $233,632,142 - Cast Away - O.K. but seriously overrated.
03. $215,409,889 - Mission: Impossible II - haven't seen
04. $187,705,427 - Gladiator - pretty solid entertainment. Has some cool moments...
05. $182,811,707 - What Women Want - thought it was a slightly better than average chick flick
06. $182,618,434 - The Perfect Storm - dumb and inaccurate movie but has some moments
07. $166,244,045 - Meet the Parents - I liked it. Dumb fun.
08. $157,299,717 - X-Men - saw this in theatre. Was happy it seemed true to the characters but was left wanting more...
09. $157,019,771 - Scary Movie - Haven't seen this
10. $155,464,351 - What Lies Beneath - This surprised me. Much better than I expected.

11. $137,748,063 - Dinosaur - Haven't seen
12. $128,078,872 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Solid entertainment, one of the better modern wire Kung Fu efforts.
13. $125,595,205 - Erin Brockovich - didn't care for it myself
14. $125,305,545 - Charlie's Angels - seemed even dumber than the TV series
15. $124,115,725 - Traffic - Haven't seen
16. $123,309,890 - The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps - just more of the same dumb fat jokes
17. $117,559,438 - Big Momma's House- Didn't like this at all
18. $115,654,751 - Remember the Titans - Haven't seen
19. $113,330,342 - The Patriot - Haven't seen
20. $106,834,564 - Chicken Run - I liked it but not as much as other efforts from those who gave us Wallace & Gromit

I only took the first 10 films from each year in the decade, but . . .

The '80's
Seen 25 or 25%. Liked 13 or 52%

The '90's
Seen 27 or 27%. Or about the same as the '80's. The difference is that I liked 20 or about 74%. Thus the '90's were a much better decade for films for me, then the '80's.

Though, both decades pale next to any of the previous decades, except for--perhaps--the '70's. The '30's thru the '60's. General audiences and I saw the same films and liked the same films. It was in the '70's that there was a divergence of opinion. I started watching fewer of the films that the general audience watched, and if I saw one of the films, I was less likely to like it, than the general audience.

I was thinking 2000 was a pretty crappy year in terms of good movies.  Looking at the list above I guess I was right.
