I've always thought of hyenas as moving around quickly and being pretty aggressive (I got this impression from watching B movies I suppose).  So yeah, gorilla/hyena hybrid.

Hyenas strike me as nastier, but lions are more formidable and generally more impressive. I went for gorilla-lion-hyena.

I voted gorilla-hyena thing, and I'll explain my reasoning.

A gorilla-lion thing would be very scary, no doubt, but a gorilla-hyena thing, with that creepy hyena laugh, would have a creepiness factor that would be bone-chilling. A gorilla-lion-hyena thing would be scary too, but would probably be too confusing to be as scary as the gorilla-hyena thing.

Hyenas are opportunistic, and cowardly.  Gorillas are intelligent and powerful.  Lions are superb hunters.  A hybrid of the three would not only be formidable, but crafty.   Buggedout

I voted gorilla-lion, but after reading the thread I like the idea of the hyena laugh; that'd be nicely freaky and different to the normal 'roar' you'd get with just the lion.

A gorilla/hyena cross would be interesting.  The extended canines would add to fear as people show emotional fear to the baring of the canines.  Increased bite strength and more carnivorous characteristics would greatly add fear.  It would also benefit from the odd behavior and opportunistic desires of the hyena.  It would make it an unknown whose actions would not be easy to predict and could be used for characterization or motivation.  I think you would get the most mileage from the combination plus the design could give you a somewhat werewolf design (extended hairs on the head and dog like muzzle) that may lead to some interesting concepts that could be worked on or used to good effect.

Baboon-Hyena...Baboon are mean buggers.  Anything with a hyena...A Gorilla-Lion could just be Marvel's X-Man Beast in one of his forms of the last 10 years.

I agree with Ed. A gorilla-lion thing might also ne seen as more noble, what with our associations with lions being the king of beasts. A hyena-gorilla hybrid might look close enough to human to seem like a distorted mockery of humanity, which is always scary. A gorilla-hyena-lion could be just another monster from a Jason & the Argonauts movie.( Although I'm sure Harryhausen would make it look awesome.)
